3 + 11 1. Add the Numerators.

5 11 3 2. Keep the Denominators the same.

11 = + 5 11 8 = 11

2 9 + 5 9 = 7 9 9 16 + 4 16 = 13 16

Reduce or simplify if necessary…

2 15 5 15 + ÷ 3 15 5 5 = = 5 15 1 3 5 GCF 5 change

Adding Fractions with Unlike Denominators

1. Find a common denominator using LCM.

2. Multiply numerator and denominator by LCM.

3. Add the converted fractions.

If I do that I’m multiplying by 1 and not changing the value!
