Purpose of the Evening
• Clarify expectations and key dates/events over the next two years • Explain how help and support is given to both students and parents • Meet key staff • Encourage fruitful partnership between school and parents to ensure success for all students in all aspects of school life

Work Experience
• 16 – 27 June 2014 (2 weeks) • Application forms to be completed in PSHE lessons during Spring term • Parents / carers asked to sign these
Work Experience
• Students are encouraged to find their own placements where possible • Sample letters of introduction are available from PSHE teachers • Talk to family & friends to find out if anyone has a contact with a company who offers work experience placements
Finding a work placement
• The most successful placements tend to be those which students have found for themselves • You can help by: o Having early discussions with them o Sitting with them when they make an enquiry o Give them something to say to help them break the ice on the first contact.

• Contact me if you have concerns about progress across a number of subjects • We may be able to offer some extra guidance through our mentoring program at Key Stage 4
Supporting your child
• Striking a balance between respecting their personal space and guidance will be the key • Offering help is often a less confrontational way of influencing people behaviour rather than issuing strict demands • Negotiating compliance through rewards and greater freedoms can often work • Showing interest in what they find interesting is a positive way of encouraging passion for learning

Your support and insight can be instrumental
• Attendance is key • Punctuality • A Calm Working Environment • Distractions e.g. Social media sites, computer gaming • Access to ICT resources (memory sticks, library membership)
Good sleep is critical
You can support your child’s sleep by:
• Set times when games consoles, lap tops and phones are put aside.
• If this becomes a real problem, then maybe consider taking these things from them or keeping them out of their bedroom.
We are encountering an increasing number of children that have significant issues with sleep deprivation.
