 The Halliburton Life Rules were developed
to help everyone go home safely. They are
the basic rules that everyone should know
and live by.
 They promote incident prevention by
encouraging people to use their Stop Work
Authority whenever they see something
being done wrong.
 The Halliburton Life Rules are intended to
be used in all of Halliburton’s businesses
and operations.
 These rules apply to everyone working for,
and on behalf of, Halliburton.
 They are based on systematic processes
for identifying, assessing and managing
risks.
 Our Life Rules are one of our key
components for identifying and managing
the hazards in our business.

Driving Safety
Driving safety includes every aspect of
the journey from start to finish,
including people and equipment.
 Take Defensive Driving training.
 Inspect all vehicles.
 Ensure that the “In Vehicle Monitoring System”
is functioning.
 Consider road conditions, and use Journey
Management.
 Never operate a vehicle if fatigued or under the
influence of alcohol or drugs.
 Secure loads.
 Always wear seat belts.
 Do not use cellphones while driving.
 Obey posted signs.
 Maintain vehicle and driver’s logs as required.
 Use your Stop Work Authority if you have any
doubt about the safety of a job.

Work Permit
Work permits are necessary to perform
high-risk activities that are not routine.




Perform risk assessments.
Utilize controls to eliminate or mitigate risks.
Only work with a valid work permit.
Don’t perform work until the permit is approved
and signed.
 Understand the work permit and follow it.
 Contact your supervisor if you have trouble
reading the work permit or understanding it.
 Use your Stop Work Authority if you have any
doubt about the safety of a job.

Personal Protection
Equipment (PPE)
PPE is the required equipment to
protect employees from hazards.
 Identify the correct PPE for the job.
 Maintain and inspect PPE, and ensure that it
fits properly.
 For respirators, ensure that you are fit-tested and
that they are suitable for the hazard.
 Use your Stop Work Authority if proper PPE is
not available.

Lock Out/Tag Out
(LOTO)
LOTO ensures the control of energy
sources while employees conduct
their work.
 Ensure that only employees that are LOTO trained
are applying LOTO.
 Follow the local LOTO program.
 Trace lines to ensure proper application of locks
and tags.
 Use your Stop Work Authority if there is any doubt
regarding energy isolation.

Confined Space
Confined spaces restrict air movement
and require permits before entering
 Identify and mark all confined spaces, and
document them in the site register.
 Ensure that only qualified employees are entering
confined spaces.
 Obtain mandatory work permits.
 Confirm that there are rescue plans and equipment
for emergencies.
 Do not enter a confined space until energy isolation
has been verified.
 Test the atmosphere in confined spaces and
monitor it during entry.
 Use your Stop Work Authority if there is any doubt
about the safety of entering a confined space.

Working at Height
Manage the risk of falling from height.
 Assess job hazards prior to performing a job.
 Use full body harness, securely attached to a
proper anchor point, above 4 feet or where
hazards may require additional protection.
 Inspect all equipment before use.
 Ensure that hand tools are secured at all times.
 Use your Stop Work Authority if proper equipment
is not available or if there is any doubt about the
safety of the job.

Chemical Handling
Ensure that proper controls and PPE
are in place when handling chemicals.
 Read the Safety Data Sheet (SDS)
and understand the hazards associated with
the chemicals.
 Know how to safely handle and properly store all
chemicals.
 Use proper PPE when handling chemicals.
 Know where the nearest safety showers, eyewash
stations and spill kits are located.
 Report all spills or chemical contact immediately
to your supervisor.
 Do not mix incompatible chemicals.
 Use your Stop Work Authority if there is any doubt
about the safety of the job.

Dropped Objects
Prevent injuries from dropped objects.
 Establish restricted areas under any work at height.
 Never walk under a suspended load.
 Identify and inspect equipment and fixtures at
height.
 Inspect all equipment for loose objects and secure
them before lifting.
 Certify and inspect all lifting equipment.
 Always have tools attached securely while working
at height.
 Ensure that no loose objects are left behind after
completing work at height.
 Use your Stop Work Authority if there is any doubt
about the safety of the job.

Hand Tools
Ensure that all hand tools are
appropriate and in good condition.





Ensure that you are properly trained.
Inspect and maintain all tools.
Do not modify hand tools.
Use proper PPE as per Job Safety Analysis (JSA).
Do not wear loose clothing or jewelry near rotating
or moving parts.
 Use your Stop Work Authority if you have any
doubt about the safety of a job.

Lifting and Hoisting
Ensure that all lifts are conducted safely.
 Plan and follow the Job Safety Analysis (JSA) prior
to all lifts.
 Inspect all lifting devices to ensure certifications
are current before each lift.
 Know the weight of your lift.
 Ensure that only certified personnel are operating
lifting equipment.
 Follow lifting procedures.
 Do not walk or stand under a load while lifting is
taking place.
 Use your Stop Work Authority if there is any doubt
about the safety of a job.
