Transcript Jesus Christ Cleanses the Temple

I Love to See the Temple
1. I love to see the temple. I’m going there someday
To feel the Holy Spirit, To listen and to pray.
For the temple is a house of God,
A place of love and beauty.
I’ll prepare myself while I am young;
This is my sacred duty.
2. I love to see the temple. I’ll go inside someday.
I’ll cov’nant with my Father; I’ll promise to obey.
For the temple is a holy place
Where we are sealed together.
As a child of God, I’ve learned this truth:
A fam’ly is forever.

“Lesson 8: Jesus Christ Cleanses the Temple,” Primary 7: New Testament, 25
• Pretend a friend is coming to
your home.
• I am going to draw a “respect
line” on the chalkboard.
• Next, I am going to mention
things the friend does.
• Tell me if the friend is showing
respect or disrespect for you
and your home.
RESPECT

• The line I draw will move up for
situations showing respect and
down for ones showing
disrespect.

DISRESPECT
• When you visit a friend’s home, what
does your “respect line” look like?
• When you come to Primary, what
does your “respect line” look like?
• What does your “respect line” look
like when you are in your own home?
• Jesus went to Jerusalem
to the temple.
• Many people
went there to
make a sacrifice
by killing an
animal and
burning it on an
altar.
• The sacrifice
helped people
think about the
Savior, who
would sacrifice
Himself by
suffering and
dying for them.
• Because some
people did not
have an animal to
sacrifice, men
sold animals to
them in the
temple.
• The men just wanted to get
money. They did not think about
God.
• Jesus saw the men selling the
animals in the temple.
• He said that the
temple was His
Heavenly
Father’s house,
a holy place.
• He did not want the men
to sell things there.
• Jesus made a
whip, overturned
the tables, threw
the money on
the floor, and
made the men
leave the temple.
• He would not let the men sell
animals and be irreverent in
Heavenly Father’s house.
• The blind and
lame came to
Jesus in the
temple and He
healed them.
• Jesus
taught daily
in the
temple.
• What did
Jesus find
some
people
doing in the
temple?
Let’s read
John 2:14
• Why did Jesus drive the sellers
and money changers out of the
temple?
• Let’s read–
–John 2:16
–Matthew 21:13
–Luke 19:45–46
• What did Jesus
say to them?
• What did Jesus
do in the
temple after he
had driven
them out?
Let’s read
Matthew
21:14 &
Luke 19:47
• Why do you think it is
important to be reverent
in holy places such as
homes, temples, and
church buildings?
• For whom
are we
showing
respect?
• When we are
reverent in places
that have been
dedicated to the
Lord we draw
nearer to Him.
• Reverence
is profound
honor and
love.
• Who was Jesus
showing love and
respect for when
he cast out the
money
changers?
• Why did he do
this?
Let’s read
John 2:16
• How can we show love and
respect for Heavenly Father and
Jesus at church?
–at home?
–at school?
–at play?
Here are some ways we can
show love and respect for
Heavenly Father and Jesus:
•When we are reverent during the
sacrament, we are showing love
and respect for Jesus and the
covenants we make with
Heavenly Father.
•When we listen to the talks in
sacrament meeting and are
reverent in Primary, we learn more
about Heavenly Father and Jesus
and what they want us to do.
•When we pray appropriately, we
are showing respect for Heavenly
Father.
• When we dress modestly, we are
showing that we respect our bodies as
sacred creations of Heavenly Father.
• When we act the way Heavenly
Father and Jesus want us to, we are
showing that we believe in them and
that it is important to us to do what
they have asked us to do.
• When we use the name of the Lord
reverently and do not misuse it, we
are showing others that we respect
and love Him.
• Let’s memorize Exodus 20:7
Enr. Act. 1
• Thou shalt not take
the name of the
Lord thy God in
vain; for the Lord
will not hold Him
guiltless that taketh
His name in vain.
• The following incident
was related by President
Spencer W. Kimball:
• “In the hospital one day I was
wheeled out of the operating room
by an attendant who stumbled, and
there issued from his angry lips
vicious cursing [swearing] with a
combination of the names of the
Savior.
Enr. Act. 1
• “Even half-conscious,
I recoiled and
implored: ‘Please!
Please! That is my
Lord whose name you
revile.’ There was a
deathly silence, then a
subdued voice
whispered: ‘I am
sorry.’
Enr. Act. 1
• “He had forgotten for the
moment that the Lord had
forcefully commanded all
his people, ‘Thou shalt
not take the name of the
Lord thy God in vain; for
the Lord will not hold him
guiltless that taketh his
name in vain’
(Exodus 20:7)” (“President
Kimball Speaks Out on Profanity,” Ensign, Feb. 1981, p. 3).
Enr. Act. 1
• Match the names of the
buildings with the pictures.
Enr. Act. 2
Enr. Act. 3
• The temple is
sacred and those
who attend can
feel close to the
Lord there.
What can you do in your life to
be worthy to enter the temple?
Enr. Act. 3
• Write down specific
ways you can show
love, honor, and
respect for Heavenly
Father and Jesus
Christ during the
coming week.
• Keep the list where
you can see it often.
Enr. Act. 4
RESPECT
DISRESPECT
• I’ll draw another respect line on
the board.
• Give examples of actions that
show respect or disrespect in the
church building.
Enr. Act. 5
RESPECT
DISRESPECT
• You need to have a “respect line”
for your relationship with
Heavenly Father and Jesus
Christ.
RESPECT
DISRESPECT
• I challenge each of you to keep
your line up by showing love and
respect for Heavenly Father and
Jesus in all you do.
I love Heavenly
Father and
Jesus Christ and
want to show
my love, honor,
and respect for
them by the
way I live.
