…..Consequently, the question if and to what
extent PhD programs could, and should
explicitly cope with the demand side of the
labor market remained open and unsettled.

We offer a program that is…
Challenging
We challenge students to complete their PhD in 3 years. We look for intrinsically motivated
students who will excel in our academic culture based on research freedom.
Interdisciplinary
Practical
At PACE, mathematicians talk to mechanical engingeers, and
physisists collaborate with software engineers. Students also
profit from an extensive academic network far beyond
Paderborn.
We have excellent partnerships with companies such as Daimler and Wincor Nixdorf. Through
projects with our industry partners, student research can provide solutions to real world
business problems.
International
Affordable
Our students come from all over the world. During our program
they can take advantage of soft skill training, intercultural activities,
company visits and German language classes.
Students receive financial aid in the form of a fellowship, and full reimbursement of travel costs.
We even refund the cost of the admission interview.
Supportive
We understand doctoral students need to focus on research. That is why we do not
require our students to teach. We also help structure their 3 years to ensure success.
And we take care time-consuming administration.
Candidates we accept are…
Top of their class
Self-motivated
Flexible

Disciplined

ITpreneurship: Kooperative Gründungsoffensive
Hochschule –Wirtschaft im IT-Cluster Paderborn
• ITpreneurship supports start-ups in the IT sector in
cooperation with the regional IT industry
• ITpreneuship links companies, potential founders of a new
business and Paderborn University and creates synergies to
strengthen the regional IT-cluster
Aims:
• Conjoint finding of new business ideas and creation of a „pool
of ideas“
• Development of actions to bring together companies and
potential founders of a new business
• Advancement of the ideas to the formation of a cooperative
company

Skills Training
Basic Soft Skill Training: communication, project management, etc.
Successful completion of a PACE (+) track leads to an extra certificate along with the PhD.
Facts & Figures
• more than 15 applications per place to study
• more than 80 PhD students with degrees from
over 20 countries
• 20% female PhD students
• > 450 publications
• > 90 alumni
• duration: < 40 months (average)
Further Activities
• Joint transferable skill program with other
NRW-Graduate Schools (Münster, Essen)
• Representing Paderborn University in the
Council of Doctoral Education of the European
University Association (EUA)
Further Activities
• Participating in the DOC CAREERS Project I and
II of the EUA

(examples: simple electronic teller machines or complex life critical
systems like a modern aircraft or railway system)
PhD-projects could be in areas like:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Reconfigurable Hardware and Software Components
Resource and Communication Management in Dynamic Networks
Organization of large Dynamic Networks
Interdisciplinary Design Processes
Performance-oriented Modelling and Specification Techniques
Intelligent Systems in Production and Logistics
Intelligent Mechatronic Systems
Selected Example: Collective Illumination of Roads
Local autonomous observation of the
traffic situation of each traffic member
Each vehicle as a participant in a
global network
Selected Example: Software Engineering –
Self-optimizing Systems in Mechanical Engineering
Vision:
• Products deriving from Mechanical Engineering with inherent partial
intelligence
• Autonomous and flexible reaction on changing conditions concerning
environment and operation
• Impulse on innovative products of the automotive industry and railway
technology

What our students say
“The opportunity for cooperation
with industry was the main reason
for me to do my PhD in Paderborn.
When you’re working for a
company, solving a concrete
business problem for them, you are
not just trying out an idea. Your
research has to be viable. It has to
lead to the solution of an actual
business issue. This is what really
made my research interesting.”
