Moisture Control

Oral Evacuation

• Saliva ejector – Placed in patients mouth • Preventive procedures, such as cleanings or sealants or orthodontic bondings, etc.

• HVE – Know how and where to place each – Keeps the mouth free of saliva, blood, water and debris – Retracts tongue, cheek – Reduces bacterial aerosol from handpiece

• HVE – Has beveled end – Grasps • Thumb to nose grasp • Pen grasp • Understand the positioning of HVE for each area of the mouth

Evacuation system

• Maintenance – Follow infection control policies – Flush the hoses at the end of the day – Check disposable traps and replace when needed – Open saliva hoses and clean or replace the screens as needed

Rinsing the Oral Cavity

• Limited area rinsing – Performed frequently during procedure • Full mouth rinsing – Rinsing the patients entire mouth – After long procedures – Before dismissal

Air-Water Syringe

• 3 functions – Air – Water – Spray, combination of air and water • Understand the guidelines for Using the Air-Water Syringe

Isolation of Teeth

• Cotton roll isolation • Cotton roll holders • Dry-angle isolation • Before removing any of the above, water should be applied, to loosen the cotton from the mucosa, thus not damaging the tissue

• Dental Dam equipment – Dental Dam material • Comes in different sizes, thicknesses, colors – Frame • Plastic or metal – Napkin • Increases patient comfort – Lubricants • Placed on patients lips for comfort and moisture

• Dental Dam punch – Creates holes in dental dam material – The stylus is adjustable to different sizes of holes • 5 is the largest and used for the clamped tooth • 1 is the smallest – Dental Dam Stamp and template • Predetermined markings – Dental Dam forceps • Used to place and remove clamps

• Dental Dam clamps – Anchors and stabilizes the dental dam • Know the parts of the dental dam clamp – Winged and wingless • Understand the concept of removing the rubber dam
