Transcript NATIONALISM 7) ISRAEL, EGYPT & SUEZ CANAL CRISIS 1956

Following World War II,
people needed something
new to scare them.
The world became divided
into Capitalist and
Communist camps.
In the USA, ideology
becomes simplified into:
COMMUNISM = BAD
CAPITALISM = GOOD.
People were genuinely
afraid of communism.
These comics, meant for children
show a fear of ATOMIC WAR
with the USSR (Russia)
So much so
that people
built fall out
shelters below
their houses.
Children were
taught to “duck &
cover” to avoid
being killed.
Senator Joseph
McCarthy started a witch
hunt to go after reds.
“McCarthyism is Americanism
with its sleeves rolled.”
"The fate of the world rests with the clash
between the atheism of Moscow and the
Christian
spirit throughout other parts of the world."
PARANIOA ABOUNDS!
- People are scared of fluoridated water, polio
vaccine and mental health services… communist
plots.
-300 actprs affected: Hollywood blacklists movie
stars who are “communist sympathizers”
- FBI & CIA go crazy.
EXAMPLE:
E. HERBERT NORMAN
- Canadian diplomat
-Suspected of being a communist.
-- Appointed as a foreign diplomat by Canadian
government in Egypt..
- Committed “suicide” in Cairo, by jumping off a
roof of the Swedish Embassy.
- Suspicion remains if the CIA forged his suicide
note.
1949:
NATO was formed to
protect members from
the Warsaw Pact by
threatening retaliation.
Canada has joined the US in
NATO (1949)
2) MEANWHILE
Since most Canadians
had seen King and
Tommy Douglas
introduce some
“socialist” ideas, they
weren’t as afraid of
communism.
“Uncle” Louis St. Laurent
is Canada’s PM
Refuses to disallow
socialism.
EXAMPLE: PADLOCK LAW
Officially called “Act to protect
the Province Against
Communistic Propaganda”
shuts down newspapers and
arrests people without the
presumption of innocence if
they are suspected of being
communists.
3) EXCEPT in Quebec, where
Maurice Duplessis shut down
communism.
- Suppresses unions, very
authoritarian.
