SWOT - First Science Definition Team meeting - Pasadena, January 28-30, 2013
Support for discussion
1
Enhancing SWOT retrievals
Examples of potential ancillary datasets
- Enhanced land cover (water mask, land cover, land overlay…)
- using optical sensors
Pleiades 1 2 – (CNES), LDCM (NASA), Sentinel 2 – A & B (ESA)
- using radar and PolnSAR
Sentinel 1 – A & B, RiSAT 2(ISRO)
- Enhanced & dynamic DEM (topography overlay)
-using radar for DTM
TanDEM-X (DLR ), P-Band radar Biomass (P-Band) (ESA)
-using optical for DSM
Pleiades1 (tri-stereo) (CNES) (1.5m relative accuracy)

SWOT - First Science Definition Team meeting - Pasadena, January 28-30, 2013
- Build upon existing and contributing to community tools:
Community Land surface models
CLM, SURFEX integrate already hydrological models
but not 2D hydraulic models.
LDAS (Land Data Assimilation Sytems)
- NASA NLDAS GLDAS ?
- Meteo-France (Surfex-EnkF, Surfex-ExKF) ?
- ECMWF (HTESSEL)
An organization of the hydrology community is needed to find
adapted solutions to go forward (Wood et al., 2011) and even
understanding the processes (Beven & Clocke, 2012).
SWOT - First Science Definition Team meeting - Pasadena, January 28-30, 2013
Support for discussion
1. What are the adapted assimilation algorithms for SWOT data ?
2. How to take into consideration scale issues as sensors have very
different resolutions (assimilate coarse into fine scale model) ?
3. Can we deliver an enhanced discharge product trough
assimilation ? By how much ? (Durand et al. 2010?) In the case of
multi sensor approaches, what is the contribution of each sensor
to the enhancements ?
4. What are the drawbacks of using assimilation ?
(interdependence, robustness, …
