Point – What does the quote show in very
simple terms?
Evidence – This is a quote taken from the
text to prove or support what you are saying.
Analysis – break down the evidence. Take
certain words and explain in detail how they
help to prove your point. (“This shows...”/
“This suggests...”/ This indicates...”) through
your analysis make clear what you think the
writer is trying to do
Speculation – provide your own opinion or an
alternative interpretation
As she looked back, a single tear
rolled down her cheek. They began
to run down her face and before
she realised she was sobbing
uncontrollably.
Let’s answer this question together
with PEAS.
How does the girl in
the story feel at this
point?

Try this one on your own!
I will give you an
extract from
HOLES, and a
question. Answer it
with PEAS.
How did Stanley feel on the bus to
CGL?
He looked out the window, although there
wasn’t much to see—mostly fields of hay
and cotton. He was on a long bus ride to
nowhere. The bus wasn’t air-conditioned,
and the hot heavy air was almost as
stifling as the handcuffs.

Now try this one –
What is life like for the homeless?
Then there’s your bruises. What bruises? Try lying on a
stone floor for half an hour. Just half an hour. You can
choose any position you fancy, and you can change
position as often as you like. You won’t find it comfy, I
can tell you. You won’t sleep unless you’re dead drunk
or zonked on downers. And if you are, and do, you’re
going to wake up with bruises on hips, shoulders,
elbows, ankles and knees – especially if you’re a bit thin
from not eating properly. And if you do that six hours a
night for six nights you’ll feel like you fell out of a train.
Try sleeping on concrete then.
Colour code your answer to check you have a 4 part
answer.
My PEAS answer
• Life for the homeless is awful.
• This is shown in the quote “you’re going to wake
up with bruises on hips, shoulders, elbows,
ankles and knees”.
• This shows that your whole body hurts from
sleeping outdoors in the cold, not just one part. I
know this because the writer gives a list of
places you will get bruises.
• In addition, the narrator also says it is worse
because homeless people bruise more “from not
eating properly”. If I was bruised and hungry I
would feel terrible, like I just wanted to give up.
Why use PEAS?
• It is easier than PEE.
• It will make sure you analyse the quote
(level 5 skill).
• You show deeper understanding.
• Your answers will be clear.
Tips
• P – keep it simple!
• E – keep it short, no more than 2 lines.
• A – pick out key words from your
evidence, what is the writer trying to
do/show?
• S – include your opinion, empathy, links to
what else you know.

I think Cinderella’s sisters are horrible. This is
shown in the quote “wicked stepsisters”. The
writer uses “wicked” to show that they are evil,
like witches. If they were related to me I would
never want to do anything for them. I feel really
sorry for Cinderella because she has to do
everything and they don’t do anything for her.
