Verizon European Backbone
Growth Requirements
• Capable to support hybrid capacity growth
– Mix of 10Gb/s, 40Gb/s and 100Gb/s
• High performance and low latency
– Avoid the use of DCMs
• Compatible with existing photonic layer infrastructure
– Expanding system lifetime
– Maintain existing line amplifiers, mux/demux devices and wavelength selective switches
• Toleration to typical physical plant uncertainties
– Mix of various fibre types, connectors, splices, re-routes, etc.
• Service interruption free capacity upgrades
– Avoid major network disruptions and/or high risk maintenance
• Easy reconfiguration with minimal physical labour
– Employ standard Field Operations staff
– Limit logistics and truck loads

Summary
• Operational and error free 100Gb/s production system
– Minimal field staff training required
– No more than standard care is needed
• Simple (10Gb/s) engineering rules
– No modifications needed in the optical plane
• Very straightforward deployment
– Installation of equipment only at terminal sites
– Highly automated commissioning due to modem training
NEXT
• Further expansion of 100Gb/s channels in Verizon’s backbone
– Enhanced scalability of the Ultra-Long-Haul network
– All routes confirmed for scaling to 100Gb/s
• Deployment of 100GbE client interfaces
– Standard is now defined: IEEE 802.3ba
– Router suppliers ready to deliver Ethernet PICs
• Deployments of 10x10Gb/s Multi-Rate client interfaces
– 10GE, STM64, OTU-2
– Migration of existing lower rate interfaces onto 100Gb/s channels
