Turnitin’s Purpose
• To deter plagiarism
• To hold students accountable
• To determine the similarity of text to
sources
• To enhance teaching and student learning
Send students to Plagiarism.org, a sister site to
TurnItIn, for help in understanding plagiarism
The Premise: Digital Submission
Students or instructors submit papers digitally
through the TurnItIn application. This can be done
through TurnItIn.com or in ANGEL.
The Premise: Extensive Search
TurnItIn searches a number of sources for matches:
1. A current and archived copy of the publicly
accessible Internet (more than 13 billion
Web pages indexed)
2. Thousands of newspapers, magazines, books,
and scholarly journals
3. More than 130 million student papers
previously submitted to Turnitin since 1996
The Premise: Originality Report
TurnItIn returns a color-coded Originality Report to
the students or the instructor. A percentage shows
the extent of possible content matches.
