ADJUSTING TO LIFE ON MELBOURNE

Police assistance is available 24-hours-a-day in Australia.

For life-threatening emergencies (police, fire and ambulance), call 000 and request an interpreter if you need one. 000 is a free call.

In Australia, drive on the left. Seat belts must be worn by the driver and passengers at all times.

Take care when crossing roads – look left, right and left again for cars, trams, cyclists and other pedestrians. Wait for the green man if you are crossing at the crossing. There is an $80 fine for “J” walking.

Keep your wallet, bag, mobile phone and other personal belongings secure at all times.

If you're approached by a person asking for money, it is your choice to donate money or to say no and walk away.

The legal drinking age in Australia is 18 years and over. Drinking alcohol in public places is not permitted in Melbourne's central activity district at any time.

Ask for directions and assistance as people are usually willing to help

Ring 000 to contact police or emergency services

The narrow streets in the CBD are usually one way, so check which way the traffic is going.

Use traffic lights wherever possible, but always check before stepping out as cars sometimes go through a red light Check that the house you are in has fire alarms

Check that there is an alternative exit in case of fire and that is always able to be opened from inside

COMPLAINTS AND APPEALS

CIC has a documented procedure, the Student Complaints and Appeals Procedure by which it ensures that students will be granted immediate access to the College ’s complaints and appeals processes. Refer to http://www.cambridgecollege.com.au/vic.

Students are encouraged, in the first instance, to resolve the concern or difficulty directly with the staff member(s) and/or students concerned.

If a satisfactory solution cannot be reached via (above), the matter should be referred to the Higher Education Course Coordinator if the matter is of an academic nature or to a Student Counsellor if the matter is more of a personal nature.

In the event that a student feels that the matter cannot be resolved via (above) the student should access the College formal Complaints and Appeals Procedure by filling the Student Complaints and Appeals form (available at reception and on the Student Intranet) and lodging this form at Reception.
