EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
We would encourage students to involve themselves in a wide variety of activities during
their KS4, to enjoy a breadth of experiences to help them develop into well rounded,
successful individuals.
Students should aim record their involvement in their Personal Development Log and
record experiences in all areas of activities.
Deyes High has an incredible array of opportunities open to students in Year 10

We would love every student to have 100% attendance during KS4!
Research shows that a consistent loss of 5% throughout school will down grade GCSE
results by 1 Grade - only full or near full attendance will ensure success

Recent amendments to the Education ( Pupil Registration) Regulations 2006
Head teachers no longer have the right to grant leave of absence
Local Authority has the power to levy fixed penalty notices

VLE
All students have access to the VLE which is an interactive learning
platform designed to enhance and support learning from within
school and at home. It is one year old now, more and more
information will be available on there. It is important that you
encourage your children to use this system as past papers, revision
material and homework will all be on there.
As parents you also have access to the VLE, it is another tool you can
use to monitor and track their progress. Please use this facility as the
VLE updates instantly so data is very current. You should all have
passwords which were sent out last academic year. Obviously
sometimes there are login issues or password issues, please note them
down as you leave .

The Core Subjects in Year 10
AQA ENGLISH
English is a two year course. Year 10 students will either study English OR English
Language & English Literature.
Sets 1,2,3 and 4 will be studying AQA English Language and English Literature
Sets 5 and 6 will be studying AQA English Language.
English Language consists of 3 units (sets 1-4)

Unit 1: Understanding and producing non fiction (2hr 15m Exam) 60%

Unit 2: Speaking and Listening (3 tasks) accredited but does not count towards final
grade.

MATHS
Exam Board: Edexcel
Specification: Linear course (1MA0H for Higher and 1MA0F for Foundation)
It is assessed by a 100% examination at the end of the course.
Both Calculator (50%) and Non Calculator (50%)exam will be sat.
Began the GCSE at the beginning of year 9
View to complete at the end of year 10.
Opportunity then to re-sit and improve grades in year 11.
For those who meet their targets and do not wish to proceed any further;
• A level 3 algebra course to strengthen algebra skills ready for A-Level.
• A Functional skills course to develop their ability to apply Mathematics in the real
world.
• Both are examined and qualifications rewarded.
As it stands an exam will be sat at the end of year 10 (May/June)

The Core Subjects in Year 10
Year 10 AQA SEPARATE SCIENCES
Comprises: Three exams and Controlled Assessment per subject.
All exams and 3 controlled assessments are completed in year 11 but important
development of controlled assessment skills occurs throughout year 10.
YEAR 10 AQA CORE SCIENCE
Comprises : Three examinations in June and Controlled Assessment. Controlled
Assessments take place throughout January and March. This will complete the
award of AQA Science in Year 10.
In Year 11 Students will follow a similar pattern of events to achieve Additional
Science GCSE.
Year 10 BTEC Science
Portfolio of evidence built up via assignments across all 3 subjects. The first
examination is this term on 14th November.

WELSH WJEB examination board.
YEAR 10 – A study of Cityscapes and the work of Michael Gutteridge and Liam Spencer.
YEAR 11 – Continuing coursework, second project “Africa”. Final exam and display
completed by Easter.
Trips are offered on the course- New York, London
Clubs are available during lunchtimes in L10 and Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday after
school.

GCSE BUSINESS STUDIES
This is a two Year AQA option which is split into three distinct areas of study.
Setting up a business, Business Growth and an Investigation of larger businesses.
The GCSE route involves Two external exam assessments along with one
‘controlled assessment’ work.
We deliver via a range of topical, appropriate and up to date media including the
Internet as well as group, paired and individual learning tasks.

Exam sat once at the end of year 11.

EXPRESSIVE ARTS (GCSE)
This course provides opportunity for students who are interested in the Arts. It is
practical based with coursework folders. Students can work alone or in groups.
You will select from variety of art forms - visual art, drama, dance, music, moving
images - specialise in your stronger areas.
Unit 1 Controlled Test – 40% of total marks
15 hours supervised time to create a presentation/performance integrating 2 art
forms and an evaluation. Taken around March in year 11.
Unit 2 Coursework - 60% of total marks from 2 pieces of Coursework completed
throughout the 2 years.(Equal weighting)
15 hour Exam will occur in Yr 11 (Autumn Term)
Opportunities to work with outside experts in a variety of different art forms.
