“I am Number Four”
“Despite the amazing powers that many of the people of Lorien possess, the
planet was defeated and its natural resources looted by Mogadorians in a
matter of days. Only nine children escaped with their guardians to Earth, where
they planned to hide until they developed their powers in order to defeat their
enemies and revive Lorien. The Mogadorians hunt the Nine and have already
killed three of them. And that's just the backstory. When Number Four, bearing
the name "John Smith," moves to Paradise, OH, he runs afoul of the school
bully, falls for the most beautiful girl in town, and befriends the local alien
conspiracy nerd in short order. There is plenty of great action, but the dialogue
is average, as is the character development. With its interesting premises and a
fast-pace telling, the story will grab readers who are willing to suspend quite a
bit of disbelief. Others, who like their science fiction with a bit more science and
internal logic, will have to search elsewhere.—”

The Planet Lorien
“In the beginning they were a group of nine. Nine aliens
who left their home planet of Lorien when it fell under
attack by the evil Mogadorian. Nine aliens who
scattered on Earth. Nine aliens who look like ordinary
teenagers living ordinary lives, but who have
extraordinary, paranormal skills. Nine aliens who might
be sitting next to you now.”

John Smith
“John Smith is the main protagonist of the novel, and Number Four in the sequence
protecting the Nine Lorien children living and hiding on Earth. He is 15 years old. He is
described as being a fit, young man with blond hair. He has three circular scars on his right
ankle, signifying the three dead Lorien children, and a scar similar to the pendent all the
Lorien children wear, signifying the charm that protects them. John is a Garde, a Lorien who
possess certain gifts and abilities that help him protect others. These gifts, or Legacies,
begin to appear throughout the novel. At the end of the novel, his Legacies are:
Telekinesis - John has the ability to move things with his mind
Lumen - Fire and heat resistance. John can withstand high heat and fire.
Animal Telepathy - John can communicate with animals, and vice versa.”

Henri Smith
“John's Cêpan, or guardian. Henri is about 50 years old when he dies.
Henri still has a distinct Lorien accent, which is very similar to French,
hence his alias "Henri". It is only at the end of the book that we are told
that his real name.
Unlike John, Henri has no powers. He plays a vital part in John's life in
that he is a solid father figure and best friend for John. Henri originally
wishes to leave Paradise, but is convinced not to by John.”

Sam Goode
“John's best friend. Sam is a devoted believer in aliens and alien
conspiracies, believing that aliens abducted his father. He is the first to
be told what John is after seeing John's palms produce light. He is
seen as a gangly kid with glasses, though they are not his. They
belonged to his father, and he wore them to see if he could find out
what happened to his father. He eventually gave this belief up.”

Number Six
“The only other Lorien child in the novel apart from the one in the first
chapter, who is Number Three. Six has no alias that we know of,
simply going by the name of Six. Her Cêpan died 3 years before the
novel begins. She is a Garde, as are all the other children.
Six's Legacies are:
Telekinesis - Like John, she can move objects with her mind.
Invisibility - Six can make herself invisible.
Elemental Manipulation - Six can control the four basic elements;
Earth, Air, Fire and Water.”

Problem
“Nine infant aliens, who closely resemble humans, flee their home planet
Lorien, to hide on Earth. An invading species, the Mogadorians, have destroyed
their planet, and followed them to Earth to hunt them down. Each of the nine
aliens is given a guardian and will develop superhuman powers as they
become adults. They are each assigned a number. These last children of Lorien
can only be killed in the sequence of their numbers. Numbers One, Two, and
Three have been killed so far.”

Sequence of Events
“With three dead and one on the run, the race to find the elusive
Number Four begins. Outwardly normal teen John Smith (Alex
Pettyfer) never gets too comfortable in the same identity, and along
with his guardian, Henri (Timothy Olyphant), he is constantly moving
from town to town -- the perpetual new kid in a series of strangely
familiar schools. Despite the fact that his nomadic lifestyle has made it
difficult to form meaningful connections, John experiences the joy of
first love with a beautiful young woman (Dianna Agron) and begins to
unlock his full potential after arriving with Henri in a small Ohio town.
With each passing day, John gains a stronger grasp on his
extraordinary new powers, and his bond to the beings that share his
fantastic fate grows stronger.” ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi
