jjjKKK
If gymnast falls on or from the apparatus during an element (or it is
significantly interrupted).
If gymnast fails to show momentary control of an element during a
landing or re-grasp.
If a strength hold or simple hold element is not held.
If a press or pull out comes from a strength hold element which has not
been recognized.
If a twisting element is performed with an over or under rotation of 90
degrees or greater.
>>
D-Score Regulations
Non-Recognition of Elements (Cont.)
Examples of non-recognition include … (Cont.)
PH - elements in cross or side support that deviate from correct position by 45
degrees or greater.
If strength hold or simple hold positions deviate from correct position by 45 degrees
or greater.
If the element is so altered in its performance that it can no longer be recognized.
Examples include:
Strength element performed almost entirely with swing.
Swing element performed almost entirely with strength.

The following deductions will apply for every aesthetic or
technical deviation from the expected performance ...
Small Error = -0.1
• Minor or slight deviation from perfect position and execution.
• Minor adjustments of hands, feet or body.
• Other minor violations of aesthetic and technical performance.
Medium Error = -0.3
• Distinct or significant deviation from perfect position and execution.
• Distinct or significant adjustments to hands, feet or body.
• Distinct or significant violations of aesthetic and technical performance.
Large Error = -0.5
•
•
•
•
Major or severe deviation from perfect position and execution.
Major or severe adjustments to hand, feet or body.
Any full or immediate swing.
Major or severe violations of aesthetic and technical performance.
Technical Directives
Determination of Execution and Technical Errors
Falls and Spotter Assistance = -1.0
•Any fall on or from the apparatus during the element or any element that fails to display.
•Momentary control during a landing or re-grasp.
•Any assistance by a spotter that contributes to the completion of an element
Don’t forget ...
If a gymnast does not perform a dismount, but lands intentionally on his feet, no 1.0
deduction for a fall will be taken
*Note: -1.0 is the maximum deduction for an element with a
fall (including all steps, touches or support on the floor that
lead up to the fall). All other execution deduction are still
applicable.

Determination of Execution and Technical Errors
Strength and Hold Parts (Continued)
•
Any press from a static strength element that was not recognized will
also not be recognized
Example: A cross on SR held above 45 degrees that is followed by a pullout results
in both skills not being recognized.
•
If the preceding strength hold element received a deduction for
incorrect position, then the same deduction (up to 0.3) applies again to
a press element from that original strength element
Example: A cross on SR held between 16-30 degrees that is followed by a pullout
will receive two separate 0.3 deductions.

Landings
•A landing needs to be prepared in such a way that the gymnast
has had time to reduce rotation and/or extend the body prior to
landing on his feet.
• A gymnast may land with the feet apart. However, after the
landing, the heels should be brought together without lifting
and moving the front of the feet (MTC Newsletter #27).
Error
Result
Landing with feet slightly apart and gymnast lifts heels and joins heels
together without lifting and moving front of feet
No deduction
Landing with feet slightly apart or less than shoulder width and gymnast picks - 0.1 for landing with
up a foot moving both feet together, OR does not join both feet together by
feet apart
lifting only the heels
Landing with feet more than shoulder width apart, AND gymnast picks up one - 0.3 for landing with
foot moving both feet together, OR does not join both feet together
feet apart

Expectations for Compositional Exercise Presentation
Atypical Straddling
A gymnast may not perform elements with a separation of legs that
serves no useful purpose or that detracts from the aesthetics of the
performance.
Note: It is acceptable to straddle on the following skills:
• SR & PB - L-press handstand
• PB - stoop glide press on 1 rail
• FX - from prone, press handstand
Repetition
Is permitted, however, skills will not receive credit for difficulty or
connection bonus. The E-jury will continue to evaluate.

Connection Bonus
Is available only for directly connected saltos in the absence of a
single large deduction. It is NOT mandatory for the connected elements
to be within the counting 10 best elements. The gymnast will receive ...
• +0.1 for any D + A,B or C combination
• +0.2 for any D + D (or higher) combination
Connection bonus will only be awarded on one side of the connection (in
the case of 3 or more directly connected saltos). Choose the side that
most benefits the gymnast. For example:
HS-salto fwd 1/1 tw. (C) + salto fwd. 2/1 tw. (D) + double salto fwd. (D) = +0.2 bonus
RO-FF-salto bwd 5/2 tw. (D) + salto fwd. stretched (B) + salto fwd. 2/1 tw. (D) = +0.1

saltos cannot be executed in direct connection with other salto
elements. In an exercise, only 1 of the following scenarios can be used:
• 1 salto element finishing in a rollout and:
- 1 non-salto element finishing in rollout
- 1 non-salto element finishing in front support
- 1 salto element finishing in front support
• 1 non-salto element finishing in rollout and 1 non-salto element
finishing in front support.
• 2 non-salto elements finishing in front support or 2 non-salto
elements finishing in rollout.
*Note: Any additional rollout elements will not receive value and will be deducted
as a routine construction error (see table of deductions for FX).

Information About the D-Score
Strength & Circle/Flair Elements
A maximum of 2 strength (including strength handstands) and a
maximum of 2 circle, flair or Russian elements may be performed in a
routine, based on chronology.
Remember ...
• Circles/flairs begin and end in front support
* especially important when counting Russians.
• Elements that involve 2 strength parts for one letter value require a
stop position in both parts to receive full value. If a stop occurs on
only one of the parts, a lower value will be awarded. For example:
- Manna (2ec)-press handstand (no stop) = C value
- legs together planche (no stop) - press handstand (2sec) = B value

Pommel Horse
A contemporary Pommel Horse exercise is characterized by a variety
of support positions on all parts of the horse permitting different types
of circular swings with legs apart and together, single leg swings and/or
scissors, and swings through the handstand position with or without
turns. All elements must be executed with swing.
Pommel Horse
Exercise Presentation
The exercise begins when the gymnast’s feet leave the floor. An approach
step or hop is permitted.
General Expectations
• Skills are executed without pauses or visible strength.
• Oblique positions during circle/flair type skills are not permitted.
• Circle/flair type skills should be performed with complete extension.
Wendeswings & Non-Handstand Dismounts
• Wendeswings should be performed with legs together.
• Dismounts must cross the body of the horse.
• Dismounts must be executed at minimum 30º above the shoulder
horizontal line.
Pommel Horse
Exercise Presentation
Scissors & Leg Swings
Gymnast must show elevation of hips and large leg separation.
Scissor to Handstand Elements
The expectation is that ...
• Swing (not strength) is shown
• Hips are stretched throughout
• Body continues in upward movement
• Legs are now required to close, or E-Jury deduction of - 0.1 - 0.3 is taken.
(MTC Newsletter #27)
Scissor to Handstand (Li Ning) Stepping Errors
• Step off pommel with 1 hand and return to pommel =
-0.3 + other execution errors
• Step off pommel with 1 hand and NO return to pommel =
-0.5 + other execution errors
• Step off pommel with 2 hands =
-0.5 or -1.0 (dependent on continuance of exercise or fall) + other execution errors
Pommel Horse
Exercise Presentation
Handstand Elements
All handstand elements should show straight arms and significant
swing. Simple handstands (without pirouetting) must cross the body of
the horse.
Note: Pirouetting handstand dismounts do not have to cross the body
of the horse if it includes a turn of at least 270º from side support or 360º
from cross support.
Also ...
In the case of a handstand dismount that receives no value, the
gymnast may remount within 30 seconds and repeat any dismount for
value (one time only). If the original dismount received a large deduction,
then large deduction is increased to -1.0 when the dismount is repeated.
Pommel Horse
Exercise Presentation
Handstand Elements (Cont.)
For flair/circle to handstand elements that return to flairs/circles (or support),
execution deductions for strength and/or hesitation must be considered ...
• On the way up to handstand
• Within the pirouette
• On the lower down from the handstand
• For a lack of extension of flairs/circles upon completion of element

Skill Specific Regulations & Restrictions (Cont.)
• A fall on a Russian Wendeswing dismount will receive credit for the completed part
of the element in group IV (to be considered a dismount the russian must pass over the

• When a fall occurs in an exercise, value should be given for the completed
part of the element prior to the fall (i.e. cross support travels, russians, and flop
sequences).
• A Wu Guonian requires a minimum of 360º of body turn to be completed with one or
two hands between the pommels (MTC Newsletter #27).
• Only 2 scissors to handstand in an exercise are permitted for difficulty value (MTC
Newsletter #27).
• Only 2 handstands from circles/flairs (also with return to leg swings, scissors, circles/
flairs) are permitted for difficulty value. A handstand dismount is NOT counted among
these 2 handstands (MTC Newsletter #27).

When does one skill end and the next skill begin?
Unless otherwise indicated, each element is defined as occurring within one
structure and ending when a new structure is initiated. For example:
• Hop elements - end at completion of hop
• Circle/flair elements - end when it changes to other
• Spindles - end when spindle action stops
• Travel elements in cross support - end when travel action or cross support
position is interrupted in some way (by circle, some other element, fall, etc.)
• All other travel elements - end when a front support position is achieved
• Magyar + Sivado - may share a common circle connecting them
• Belenki, Urzica & Moguilny - may begin in cross support (facing in or out)
or side support
Remember ... elements begin and end in front support.

Handstands - Credit or No Credit?
In the case of handstands that are achieved with strength and/or a lowering
of the hips, NO CREDIT will be given if there is a large error.
Note: Along with a large deduction, other deductions (legs, feet, bent arms,
touching horse, etc.) may be taken. However, no additional deduction for
strength or angle will be applied.
* This includes handstands from scissors or circles/flairs (including dismounts)
Handstand Dismounts
If no credit is given due to a large error (as described above), the gymnast
may repeat the dismount. However, the large error (-0.5) is changed to -1.0.

Still Rings
An exercise on the Rings is composed of strength, swing, and hold
parts. These parts and combinations are executed in a hang position,
to or through a support position, or to or through the handstand
position. Execution with straight arms should be predominant..
Still Rings
Information About Exercise Presentation
From a stand, the gymnast must jump or be assisted to a still hang with legs
together and good form. The evaluation begins the moment the gymnast’s feet
leave the floor. The coach is not permitted to give gymnast an initial swing.
Starting the Exercise (Arm Bending)
Beginning with arms vertical and straight ... The gymnast may NOT bend his arms
when moving to the first position (inverted hang) unless specifically needed for
element completion (i.e. Nakayama, Element I.13) (MTC Newsletter #27).
During the Exercise (Arm Bending)
The gymnast may only bend their arms during a transition between elements
when necessary to properly perform the next element (MTC Newsletter #27).
Added Holds (non-listed parts)
Non-listed parts (inverted hang, dorsal hang, etc.) that are held for 2 seconds or
more will deducted - 0.1 each time (MTC Newsletter #27).

Expectations for Swing Skills
• Swings that reverse direction and swing back down are not permitted
(i.e. Homna and swing back to straddle L or straddle L press to L).
• Yamawaki/Jonasson - should show no support position during completion
(full support = -0.5 & no credit, partial support = -0.1 - 0.3 & credit).
Expectations for Strength Skills
• Held for minimum of 2 seconds.
• Must be reached directly with straight arms and no postural corrections.
• Shoulders may not rise above level of final hold position in swing to strength
skills.
• A false grip is not permitted.

Legs together planche & uprise straddle planche
• Only 2 cross type elements (regular, L-cross or V-cross) and only 2
planche type elements (legs together or straddled) are permitted in an
exercise (MTC Newsletter #27).
• Gymnast may not perform more than 3 group III or IV skills in
succession. The 4th and subsequent elements will not be recognized
unless they follow a “B” value swing skill from group I or II (except any
kind of kip/back kip). The swing skill does not have to be among the 10
best or top 4 counting in an element group (MTC Newletter #27).

minimum “B” value required to break up the strength sequence. Therefore,
the L and press handstand are both unrecognized.

Strength & Swing to Strength Skills (Cont.)
• If no stop is shown (1 second minimum), element will not be recognized.
• Strength presses and lifts that follow a previous hold element (and end in
a 2 second hold) will not be recognized if previous hold element was not
recognized. For example:
Maltese (no hold) + press to planche (2 sec)
Cross (held > 45º) + pullout to L (2 sec)
* In both cases, the second skill is unrecognizable due to the nonrecognition of the previous skill due to poor execution.
• Pineda type elements must be performed slowly with straight body and
straight arms to avoid deductions as well as the possibility of being
classified as a group III skill
Note: Typically, a Pineda not performed in this manner will be classified as a kip to
cross.

Vault
Each vault begins with a run and a take off from both feet (with or without a round
off) to the vault board with legs together and is executed with a brief support
phase on the table with two hands. The vault may contain single or multiple turns
around the two axes of the body. After the first vault, the gymnast returns without
delay to the starting position and, at the signal of the D1 judge, performs his
second vault (if gymnast is attempting to qualify for vault finals or is competing in
vault finals).
Vault
Information About Exercise Presentation
Although the vault begins with the first step or hop of the gymnast on the
runway, the evaluation begins the moment the feet contact the vault board.
The evaluation ends with a landing behind the table in standing position
facing either towards or away from the table.
Pre-Elements
Aside from a round-off (yurchenko style), pre-elements are not allowed.
Round - Off Entry Vaults
• Must use safety collar.
• Use of a “handy mat” placed before board is optional.
Body Position
Indistinct body positions are deducted by E-jury and may result in
recognition as a lower value vault by the D-jury.
Vault
Information About Exercise Presentation
Elements of the E-Jury Evaluation
• First flight phase (pre-flight) - from the board to support with 2 hands on
table.
• 2nd flight phase - the pushing off of the table through the landing (a
distinct rise of the body should be evident).
• Body position in the momentary support on the table.
• Deductions with regard to the deviation from the extended axis of table.
• Technical execution during the entire vault.
• The landing.
Vault
Information About Exercise Presentation
2nd Flight Phase
• Gymnast must show distinct rise in height of his center of gravity.
• Tucked or piked salto vaults must show a distinct opening in preparation
for the landing.
Landing Rules
The gymnast must land on two feet within the landing area. Stepping on the
lines is permitted. Stepping over either of the lines results in a neutral
deduction taken from the final score by the D1 judge.

Additional Run Approaches
When the gymnast has performed an empty run, a 1.0 deduction will be
taken. An empty run is permitted as follows:
• When performing one vault, a second approach is permitted with

Information About Exercise Presentation
The exercise begins the moment the feet leave the ground. The feet must
leave the ground simultaneously.
• Vaulting board may be used for mount if placed at same height as landing mats.
• Pre-elements are not permitted.
Layaways (& Empty Swings)
Back swings in support or upper arm hang that do not lead to at least a value
part but simply reverse direction and swing back down are deducted, ie.

Bent Arms vs Straight Arms
• Elements that deliberately regrasp in bent arm support are considered to be
the same as elements that regrasp in upper arm support (i.e. Suarez to bent
arm support = Suarez to upper arm support).
• Elements that are initiated from bent arm support are considered the same as
elements from or through support (i.e. dip rev. cut HS = rev. cut HS).

Combined Elements
Elements formed by combined elements (Makutz, Pegan, etc.) must demonstrate
no pause between elements, or they revert to their independent values.
Elements to Handstand
Elements that are supposed to end in a handstand may swing to or through
the position. However, if swinging through the position, the gymnast needs
to show that the handstand could have been held if desired.
Parallel Bars
Information About the D-Score
Elements Performed to 1 Bar (Chiarlo, Piasecky, etc.)
These elements must be held for 1 second for full value and no deduction.
If the gymnast ...
• Stops in handstand without a 1 second hold, value is given with .3 deduction
by E-jury
• Demonstrates no stop in the handstand, no value is given along with the
appropriate deductions being taken
Also ...
For a Chiarlo, due to the need to have hands slightly apart, A slight deviation of
shoulder/body is permitted. Deductions will be taken for excessive hand
separation or body deviation. This could potentially lead to non-recognition
(MTC Newsletter #27).

Must show conspicuous rise of the body.
Casts (Layaways)
Back swings (casts) that do not lead to a value part but simply reverse
direction and swing back to a hang position are deducted each time (-0.3).
Examples include ...
• following a kip - cast and layaway to giant
• following a kip - cast in overgrip to stalder
• following a backward swing in hang - hop to overgrip and swing forward

Information About the D-Score
General Regulations
• The value and identification number of listed elements are the same
regardless of the position they are performed from.
• The value and identification number of listed elements are the same
regardless of grip position.
• Elements ending in double el-grip are typically valued one letter higher
than the same element ending in a one arm el-grip.
• Unless otherwise noted, elements performed with or from feet on the bar
are not permitted (exception: Piatti elements).
• Starting or re-grasping flight elements with one hand has same value
and identification number as those that start or re-grasp with two hands.

Information About the D-Score
General Regulations (Cont.)
• Elements with hops to a handstand that include turns, must initiate turn
during the hop on the way up. Element is finished when both hands regrasp.
• Elements performed in el-grip belong to the Element Group in which they are
listed (i.e. Jaeger from e/g is in group II, dismount from e/g is in group V).
• A Rybalko is expected to end in el-grip and show a visible hop and fluid
turn (not a turn on the supporting arm).
• Turning elements in a one hand support are considered to be finished
once the gymnast regrasps with the second hand.
• Unless otherwise indicated, an element composed of two separate
elements will result in divided values when a grip change occurs (i.e.
endo in o/g, change one hand to u/g and 1/1 turn to m/g = B+C).

Information About the D-Score
1-Arm Elements
A maximum of 2 swings (skills) that pass through lower vertical are allowed.
A 3rd element would be unrecognized.
Adler (stoop rearways) Elements
A maximum of 2 stoop circle rearways through handstand are allowed. A
3rd element would be unrecognized (i.e. 1/1 Takemoto, 1/2 Takemoto, Jam, etc.)
Turning Skill Variations
An exercise cannot include more than one grip variation of the same
element. The one executed 2nd chronologically (no matter the value) will
be unrecognized. Examples of turning skills with different grip variations:
• Rybalko to m/g & Rybalko to e/g
• 1/1 turn to e/g & 1/1 turn to m/g
• Stalder higgins e/g & Stalder higgins m/g

Information About the D-Score
Tkatchev 1/2 (Lynch & Moznik) & Yamawaki 1/2
In order to receive their desired value, the gymnast must ...
• complete the 1/2 turn
• swing to handstand after re-grasp
Note: A failure to complete either of these requirements will result in the gymnast
receiving value for the skill without the 1/2 turn.
* A Tkatchev 1/2 (D) that does not swing to handstand, will actually
receive value for a Tkatchev (C).
* This could create repetition problems if gymnast plans to do a Tkatchev later in
the routine.
El-Grip & Russian Giants
Gymnast must swing through the bottom and over the top of the bar in e/g to
receive value and element group IV credit.

Information About the D-Score
Zou Li Min
If executed with insufficient turning (> 90º on first full twist), the skill will
either be devalued to a 1-arm giant swing (B) or not recognized and
deducted -0.5 by E-Jury.
Yamawaki
Must be stretched and pass through a vertical body position over the bar for
no deductions. Excessive pike will be deducted and/or could also lead to
recognition of a B value flight element.
