What is Music Therapy?
 Established healthcare/human service
profession.
 Structured and planned use of the power of
music to focus and direct change and treatment.
 Music therapists use music interventions and
strategies to facilitate changes that are nonmusical in nature.
Where do Music Therapists
Work?
Music therapists work with children, adolescents,
and adults with:
 Acute, chronic, or terminal illness
 Developmental disabilities
 Mental illness
 Physical disabilities
 Acute or chronic pain
 Wellness settings
Internship Summary
•MusicWorx Inc. is an American Music Therapy
Association (AMTA) approved internship site. As
such, it has met criteria for approval under the
National Roster Guidelines per the new Standards
for Education and Clinical Training.
•There are 4 interns
working with MusicWorx at
any given time.
•Each intern is required to
be proficient on guitar,
piano, and voice. Some
also play other instruments
such as violin, cello, flute,
or clarinet.
•Each intern has earned an
undergraduate degree, a
graduate degree, or an
equivalency degree in Music
Therapy from an AMTA
approved university.
•A six-month internship is
required in order to be eligible
to sit for a Board Certification
Exam.

To ensure the quality of music delivered to clients, all
music therapists must follow a general procedure for each

Neurologic Music
Therapy
Neurologic music therapy (NMT) is the research
based treatment system for clients with
neurologic disorders, autism, and other various
disabilities that is based on utilizing the
physiological mechanisms inherent in music
perception and production. Treatment
techniques are standardized for functional
therapeutic outcomes.
