CBPS-M8E1
Mobile, hospital and collective
protective shelter from chemical
and biological threats.
Chemical Biological Protective Shelter (CBPS) – M8E1
• Chemical Biological Protective Shelter (CBPS)…is a self contained,
mobile medical unit that is a rapidly deployable collective protection
system designed to operate in the forward battle area.
Chemical and Biological Protective Shelter
Benefits
Onboard primary and backup power generators
Digital touch-screen-operated control system
Compatible with JCAD, ACADA, or M8A1 chemical agent detectors
Environmentally controlled sustained operation (constant temperature)
Fabric shelter resistant to chem/bio agents for up to 5
exposures/decontaminations
Systems are capable of being linked together to form complexes of
protected, environmentally controlled medical operations
Dual-use system that can support response to natural disasters in the
homeland and also as a command and control center
Four CBPSs linked together at FOT in Ft. Drum, NY (above)
With CBPS - Medical Component
Key Points for CBPS deployment
• Automatic CB protection in case of
wider contamination
• Easily linked with other CBPS
systems
• Strike/Erect in 20 minutes
• Surgical capabilities
• Mobile, self contained
• Self contained power generation
• Heating/AC
• 33 medical chests on a self
contained platform

With CBPS - Set up (4 personnel)
CBPS-Provides a mobile medical capability for lifesaving care
• Echelon I and II medical treatment
• 400 sq ft for treating patients
• 33 standard medical chests instead of
14 in legacy system
Example
• Mobility allows for greater flexibility in
ensuring there is no impact to
mission-Saving lives
• Clean environment!

National Guard and CBPS
• The Army National Guard has a requirement for 285+
Chemical Biological Protective Shelters (CBPS).
(Requirement set by G8 and National Guard Materiel Programs Division ARNG-RMQ)
• VA,MD, DC (National Capital Region), AL, IL have all
expressed interest in CBPS.
• Critical dual use equipment which can be deployed during
natural disasters or WMD events.

Summary
The chemical and biological threat is real - Iran, Libya, Syria.
The National Guard needs dual-use medical WMD gear with flexibility to
respond to natural disasters. The National Capital Region (NCR) states
(to include Maryland) are on the record requesting this equipment.
Industry has made $9 million in investments to prepare for CBPS
production. Over 11 states support this program impacting 157
employees directly to include small business, woman owned, and
veteran owned.
Industry is in production. To date, Smiths has delivered 38 systems.
The need is great for this system and we are ramping up production.
Production will be gapped in August 2014.
