ABSTRACT
In the present study, a survey describe on the user of the
electronic information focusing on the Internet based Eresources at Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University
Central
Library,
however
it
is
also
examines
the
utilization, purpose, difficulties and satisfaction level of
users about Internet based e-resource services provided
by the library. Hence the study highlighted the problems
related to the use of Internet based e-resource.
INTRODUCTION
• The Internet is a universal system of interconnected computer
networks that promotes free flow of information by packet switching
using the standardized Internet protocol suite.
• Internet is a network of networks that consists of millions of academic,
government, private, business and public networks of local to global
scope that are linked by copper wires/fiber-optic cables, and wireless
connections technologies.
• The Internet provides various information resources and services,
such as electronic mail, on line journals, online articles, e-book, online
chat, electronic transaction, discussion forum, file transfer and file
sharing, online newspaper, online gaming, and the inter-linked
hypertext documents and other resources of the World Wide Web.
• Keeping in view, the sophisticated and multidimensional features of
Internet an attempt has been made to assess of Babasaheb Bhimrao
Ambedkar University library users. the higher education scenario in
both quantitative and qualitative terms.
• The data collected through the questionnaire and the analysis and
interpretation has been made on the basis of filled questionnaire
received.

Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University, Lucknow is
one of the Central Universities have mandate with the
following aims:

Promote advanced knowledge by providing instructional and research
facilities.
Make provisions for integrated courses in key and frontier areas of
science and technology and other allied disciplines.
Offer appropriate courses including agricultural technology and rural
crafts relevant for the development of socially and economically
depressed sections of the people.
Promote the study of the principals for which Babasaheb Bhimrao
Ambedkar worked during his life time.
Make appropriate measures for promoting innovations in teachinglearning processes in interdisciplinary studies and research; and
Pay special attention to the promotion of educational and economic
interests and welfare of the people in general and of members
belonging to the Scheduled Caste and the Scheduled Tribes in
particular.

The University have strengthen with 75 (54 M & 21 F) teaching staff
members, 87 (78 M & 09 F) non teaching members, 911 (657 M & 254 F)
PG students and 181 (112 M & 69 F) research scholar as on 31.03.2010.
CENTRAL LIBRARY- BBA UNIVERSITY LUCKNOW
• The professional foundation for the library services of Babasaheb
Bhimrao Ambedkar University, Lucknow was laid in January 1998.
• The library situated at the first floor of the Block 4 of the
Administrative building having an area of about 500 sq. mts.
• The library acts as the main learning resource centre of the
University to supplement educational and information needs of the
faculty, researcher and students of university and provides
information services and facilities to meet the requirements of the
University’s teaching, training, research programs and covers nonteaching also.
• Collections of the library can also be browsed from different
departments through campus network.
• The campus network covers all the departments including library,
administration, sports, audio-visual research centre and the hostels
and is supported by 2Mbps-leased line Internet connection.
• The central library provides access to Springer Link and JCCC
through UGC-INFONET consortium.
OBJECTIVES OF THE PRESENT STUDY
• To identify the use of Internet.
• To know the purpose of Internet use.
• To find the difficulties in browsing the Internet
based information resources, and
• To identify the user requirements.
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
There is only one questionnaire, divided in two
sections: • Section A :
This section having general questions regarding the
user name, designation, sex age, department and
contact details.
• Section B :
This section having questions concerned with the
gender wise study, Purpose of visiting BBAU Library,
Use of Internet at different degrees, Purpose of
Internet use (gender wise), Difficulties in accessing
Internet based e-resources and Facilities required by
the users.
ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA
• Each question mentioned in the questionnaire was
coded for the possible answer or alternative given and
the data was transferred on the graph paper.
Tabulation was done manually. After decoding the
data, percentage and frequencies were calculated for
each alternative.
• Total 250 questionnaires were distributed among the
users of the library comprising of PG students,
research scholars, teachers and other non-teaching
staff members and total 185 filled questionnaires were
received.

Out of 185 users, 130 were males while the remaining 55 were females.
As stated above the users community comprising of both male and female .

Categories of User
The male representatives, were > female counterparts in all the group of
users. Regarding age factors, majority of the users are found to be below
30 years (136; 73%), users belonging to the age group 30-50 years are
accounted as 46 (25%) and 3 (2%) approx of the faculty members are above
50 years.

54.05% users are using the Internet to full extent and 29.18%uses the
Internet to some extent and 16.75% uses the Internet to little extent.

Purpose
The most important purpose of Internet use is access of online journals
(97.29%), 64.32% of user downloads their desired information from
different web-based resources and websites, 60.54% of user visit various
important sites of their use, 55.13% user browse J-CCC e-resources,
27.02% user use Internet for E-mail function and 22.16% user use Internet
for chat /other purpose.

Purpose
There is no any similarities have been established between both genders of
users concerning their purpose of using Internet on the above mentioned
aspects.

The data shows that the limitation of online full text journal articles (47.02%),
limitation of Internet access speed (31.89%) and lack of knowledge in
browsing e-journals (21.08%) & computer handling (19.45) were the major
difficulties in accessing the Internet based e-resources.

59.49% of respondent wish to have more number of computers of latest
configuration, 42.16% respondent wish to have frequent training facility from
experts, 26.48% of respondent resource sharing, 60.54% of the respondent
wish to have faster speed of Internet access 43.24% respondent wish to have
e-resources printing facility, and 25.40% respondent also wish to have
wireless network facility in the campus.
