How do BHS exams work?
• Stage exams have now been unitised giving more
flexibility to candidate
For example: Stage 1 Horse Knowledge and Care is split
into three units and Stage 1 Riding is one unit.
All four units can be taken on the same day or separately each unit passed can be ‘banked’ and once all four units
have been passed the qualification is awarded.
If a candidate fails a particular unit they only need to
retake that unit
• Those who take and pass their complete exam on
the same day will be awarded a Distinction on their
certificate to reflect this achievement

Background
• Equestrian Qualifications Limited (EQL)
– The awarding body for the majority of equestrian
exams offered by the BHS
– Includes BHS Stage exams, UKCC, WBDs and SVQs
• Qualification and Credit Framework (QCF)
– Exams that are on this are able to receive funding
– Some comprise of smaller qualifications
(Certificates and Awards) and all can be broken
down into units

BHS Examinations
• BHS Examinations and qualifications are internationally
recognised
• In a recent survey, 96% believe BHS qualifications are
relevant to industry employers and 88% thought that
BHS qualifications would support them in a career, or
career progression, working with horses
• Whatever career you choose to follow BHS qualifications
will give you a strong foundation to build on

BHS exam
structure
• Stages 1, 2, 3 and the PTT (along with a
completed teaching portfolio {UKCC Level
2}) lead to the BHSAI qualification. This
should be viewed as the start of your
qualifications, not the end!
• Stage 4 and the ITT (Intermediate Teaching
Test {UKCC Level 3}) lead to the BHSII
(Intermediate Instructor)
• The Stable Manager’s exam, Senior
Equitation and Senior Coaching exam lead
to the BHS Instructor qualification
• Finally, the Fellowship of the BHS

BHS Stage 1
• The first step on your career
ladder
• Provides basic horse care
skills and knowledge to
undertake daily, routine
tasks
• Offers basic riding skills to
include riding without
stirrups and work over
ground poles

• Will allow you to work
safely, under supervision
• Minimum age: 14
BHS Stage 2
• Builds on from Stage 1 and introduces show-jumping (up to
2’6”/76cm) and lungeing
• Minimum Age: 16
• Pre-requisites: BHS Stage 1 or PRTs (1-6 horse care and
equitation) or BET Assistant Ride Leader and R&RS (for Stage
2 riding only)
• A successful candidate should be able to work under limited
supervision
• Allows entry into, or progression within, employment

BHS Stage 3
• Allows progression from BHS Stage 2 and introduces crosscountry riding
• Minimum age: 17
• Pre-requisites: BHS Stage 2 or BET Ride Leader
• A successful candidate should be able to ride a course of
show jumps up to 3’3”/1m and a cross-country course up
to 3’/0.9m and show the ability to work horses in a suitable
outline for their education
• You will be able to carry out a range of tasks relating to
horse management and be able to work under minimal
supervision

Preliminary Teaching Test (PTT)
• This is the first of the
coaching exams and may
also include the United
Kingdom Coaching
Certificate (UKCC) Level 2*
• Minimum age: 18
• Pre-requisites: BHS Stage 2
• A successful candidate
should be able to teach
under supervision
• Includes coaching individual
riders and group riders for
improvement
• Once passed, you can join
the BHS Register of
Instructors once additional
requirements are achieved:
– First Aid Certificate
– Safeguarding
– DBS check

BHS Stage 4

Allows you to work alone and unsupervised
Minimum age: 18 for Riding; 19 for Care
Pre-requisites: BHS Stage 3
You will have a knowledge of how to manage an
equestrian business
• You will be expected to ride a variety of horses (young,
green, sharp, idle) and be able to assess their
performance up to Elementary Dressage level
• Jumping includes a course of fences (show jumping and
cross-country) up to 3’6”/1.07cm

Intermediate Teaching Test (ITT)
• A progression from the PTT, you should be able to teach a
wide variety of clients and training horses
• You will also be tested on your business management
knowledge and coaching theory
• Minimum age: 19
• Pre-requisites: BHSAI or BHS PTT and completed Coaching
Portfolio (or log book)
• You will also have the opportunity to register for the UKCC
Level 3 Coaching Certificate

BHS Intermediate Instructor (BHSII)

Ride Leader Level 2
• Unitised
• Includes Stage 1 Care within qualification (top-up available if
already hold BHS qualifications)
• Holders will be able to help first time riders on short rides,
treks or hacks and assist in the day-to-day running of a
commercial establishment
• Minimum age: 16
• Pre-requisites: BHS Riding and Road Safety Test, current First
Aid at Work certificate

Ride Leader Level 3
• Unitised
• Includes Stage 2 Care units within qualification (top-up
available if already hold BHS qualifications)
• Holders will be able to take sole charge of first-time or more
experienced riders on a ride or around the yard. You will also
be able to train new or junior members of staff.
• Minimum age: 18
• Pre-requisites: Ride Leader Level 2, BHS Riding and Road
Safety Test, current First Aid at Work certificate

Riding Holiday Centre Manager
• Holders will be a competent manager or owner, with
knowledge of both practical and financial aspects of running
