The Big Idea
We Don’t Need a Ph.D. to Pray.
All We Need Are the ABC’s:
• Ask God:
“Why?”
• Beg God:
“Help!”
• Celebrate God: “Thanks!”
When Life’s a Mess, Ask God—
“Why?” and “How Long?”
Psalm 13:1-2
When Life’s a Mess, Ask God—
“Why?” and “How Long?”
Psalm 13:1-2
“How long, O LORD? Will you forget me forever?
How long will you hide your face from me? How
long must I wrestle with my thoughts and every
day have sorrow in my heart? How long will my
enemy triumph over me?” (Psalm 13:1-2).
“How Long?”
How long will You forget, O LORD?
How long? How long?
How I long to see Your face, O LORD.
How long will You hide?
“How Long?”
How I struggle with my thoughts, O LORD.
How long? How long?
Suffer sorrow in my heart, O LORD?
How long will You hide?
How long? How long?
“How Long?
Look on me, give an answer, LORD.
How long? How long?
Give me light or I can live no more;
How long will You hide?
“How Long?”
My foes rejoice when they see me fall.
How long? How long?
“We have overcome him now,” they call
How long will You hide from me?
How long? How long until You set me free?
How long?
“How Long?”
Hear, O LORD, You’re ever good to me.
How long? How long?
My heart rejoices how You set me free!
How long will You hide?
“How Long?”
LORD I sing for what I’m hoping of.
How long? How long?
How I trust in Your unfailing love!
How long will You hide?
How long? How long? How long? How long?
Will You wait forever? How long?
Ask God “Why?” and “How
Long?” about God: Psalm 13: 1
“How long, O LORD? Will you forget me
forever? How long will you hide your face
from me?” (Psalm 13:1).
“How Long, O LORD, Will You
Misplace Me? Forever?”:
Psalm 13:1a
“How long, O LORD? Will you forget me
forever? How long will you hide your face
from me?” (Psalm 13:1).
“How Long, O LORD, Will You
Play Hide-and-Seek with Me?”
Psalm 13:1b
“How long will you hide your face from
me?” (Psalm 13:1).
“How Long, O LORD, Will You
Play Hide-and-Seek with Me?”
Psalm 13:1b
“The LORD bless you and keep you. The
LORD make his face shine on you and be
gracious to you; the LORD turn his face
toward you and give you peace”
(Numbers 6:24-26).
Ask God “Why?” and “How
Long?” about Ourselves
“How long must I wrestle with my thoughts
and everyday have sorrow in my heart?”
(Psalm 13:2).
Ask God “Why?” and “How
Long?” about Others
“How long will my enemy triumph over me?
My enemy will say, ‘I have overcome him,’
and my foes will rejoice when I fall”
(Psalm 13:2b, 4).
When Life’s a Mess, Beg God—
“Help!” Psalm 13:3
“Look on me and answer, O LORD my God.
Give light to my eyes or I will sleep in death”
(Psalm 13:3).
Beg God to See and Act Strongly
on Your Behalf: Psalm 13:3
“Look down from heaven and see, from your
lofty throne, holy and glorious. Where are
your zeal and your might? Your tenderness
and compassion are withheld from us”
(Isaiah 63:15).

on Your Behalf: Psalm 13:3
“She gave this name to the
LORD who spoke to her:
‘You are the God who sees
me,’ for she said, ‘I have
now seen the One who
sees me’” (Genesis 16:13).
Beg God for Sight and Strength to
Act Strongly on God’s Behalf:
Psalm 13:3
“Give light to my eyes or I will sleep in
death” (Psalm 13:3).
When Life’s a Mess, Celebrate
God—“Thanks!”: Psalm 13:5-6

rejoices in your salvation. I will sing to the
LORD, for he has been good to me”

When Life’s a Mess, Celebrate
God—“Thanks!”: Psalm 13:5-6

are no grapes on the vines, though the olive
crop fails and the fields produce no food,

cattle in the stalls…” (Habakkuk 3:17-19)
When Life’s a Mess, Celebrate
God—“Thanks!”: Psalm 13:5-6
“…yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will be
joyful in God my Savior. The Sovereign LORD
is my strength; he makes my feet like the
feet of a deer, he enables me to tread on the
heights” (Habakkuk 3:17-19).
Thank God for His Loyal Love:
Psalm 13:5
“But I trust in your unfailing love (hesed);
my heart rejoices in your salvation”
(Psalm 13:5).
