Air Ride Suspension
1
The Comparison
Air Ride vs. Spring Ride
Air Ride
(4) points for load bearing.
(1) axle curbs or hits large
bump, stop within air bag
bottoms out causing focal point
of combined weight in small
area.
Probable componetry damage.
Shocks to maintain
Height control valve to
maintain
Air leaks to maintain
Pivot bolt to 700 ft lbs
Alignment difficulties
Bushings are long life
Decreased trailer damage
through vibration or shock
such as lights, door hardware
& fasteners.
Soft ride
Spring Ride
(6) points for load bearing.
(1) axle curbs or hits larg
bump, load is dispursed
through out suspension –
spreading load out to large
area.
Minimal if any damage.
Equalization
of weight
User friendly
design
Empty trailer
hauling
Replacement of springs will
occur once or twice in life of
trailer.
Few air lines to have leak.
Increased trailer damage
through vibration or shock
such as lights, door hardware
& fasteners.
Hard ride

The Comparison
Air Ride vs. Spring Ride
Air Ride
Very good ride smoothing out
vibrations and small bumps.
Approximately 150 lbs heavier
Meritor RHP-11 = No Dock
Walk
Reyco 86AR = No Dock Walk
Trailing arm design = Dock
Walk
Anti-Dock lock/walk systems
come in varying designs:
Flipper plates such as EDL
(Cargo Care) or Surlok
(Hendrickson) that give
mechanical fusion between
subframe and supension
trailing arm. Dump valves are
also available that dump the
air out of the bags – setting
the subframe down on the stop
within the bag.
Starting at
approximately
25% more in
cost.
Spring Ride
Loaded trailer
hauling
Weight
difference
Good ride with little vibrations
or small bumps being noticed.
Approximately 150 lbs lighter
Dock Walk
&
Dock squash
Cost
No Dock Walk.
Very little Dock squash.
Base price.

WNC Types
Trailing Beam Arm Types
Ridged Trailing Beam Arm – rotational compliance in bushing.
Spring Trailing Beam Arm – rotational compliance in spring arm and
brushing.
Note:
A.) Four (4) total rubber bushing used in tandem application at the pivot bolt points.
B.) Due to downward/forward arc movement of hanger and trailing beam when trailer is
being loaded/breaks being set, the amount of downward movement is carried over into
the tires which turn the tires causing Dock Walk.
C.) Siamese trailing beam arm is an application with the hangers at
the outer ends of
the subframe and the air bags are near the center of the subframe. This application
eliminates Dock Walk because the trailing beams to tires off-set themselves from the ends
of the subframe.

Suspensions
WNC Types
Parallelogram Types
Single unified frame bracket (hanger) attached to middle of subframe
each side.
Sixteen (16) total rubber bushings used in tandem application at the
pivot bolt and torque arm points.
With the axles being on each side of the middle bracket (hanger), the
control arms move straight downward at the middle bracket (hanger)
connection…. No Dock Walk.
