Error Correction ?
•
Distance to satellite = signal's travel time x speed of light
•
Speed of light is only constant in a vacuum. Signal passes
through ionosphere and through troposphere and gets
slowed down – like bad clocks.
•
Two ways to minimize this error.
1. Predict what delay might is on a typical day - modeling however atmospheric conditions are rarely exactly
same.
2. Compare the relative speeds of two different signals dual frequency measurement, is complex and is possible
with advanced expensive receivers.

Differential GPS
• It uses 2 receivers, one “stationary” and other actual
one used for making position measurements
• These 2 receivers are close - say within 300 km. GPS
signal that reaches both of them travel through the
same slice of atmosphere
• Reference receiver us kept at an accurately surveyed
point. It uses its known position to calculate ideal
travel time of the GPS signal, and compares it with
what actual travel time is. The difference is an "error
correction" factor
• The receiver then transmits this error information to the
other receiver so it can use it to correct its

Dimensions through GPS
• We measure position of 4 points from the same
receiver
• Inaccuracy in timing/position is same for all 4points
since signal that reaches at all these 4 positions, travel
through the same slice of atmosphere
• Therefore our position may be inaccurate, but
dimensions are correct.
• While mapping the plots, we may be off by 10 meters
• This is like shifting the whole village map by 10 meters
