RDA for Copy Catalogers Brigham Young (1) • ISBD bracketing: 260 $a[Washington, D.C.] :$b[G.P.O?] :$c[2009?] • ISBD ending punctuation: if an abbreviation at the end of an element ends w/full stop, full stop for ISBD punctuation also (ed..) • Inaccuracies transcribed as found • Other fields added as necessary to describe item • No abbreviations unless that’s how it’s found on the source • Desc: i • 040: $b eng $e rda • 100: $e author (or $e composer, etc.) • 245: Statement of responsibility: transcribed as found on source (include phrases), no limit on how many • 250: Edition statement: transcribe as found (use only abbreviations found in the source) • 260: Publication information: transcribe as found. • Copyright date will use symbol • 300: Physical description: “cm” is symbol (not spelled out); abbreviations for dimensions and duration [Note: because “cm” is considered a symbol it

This occurs only when there is a 490 field in the record.] • Extent examples: 1 audio disc [AACR2 had “1 sound disc”]; 1 online resource; 3 microfiches; 2 microfilm reels; 5 microscope slides; 1 overhead transparency; 6 cards; 2 videodiscs; 1 videocassette • No abbreviations, no bracketing for unnumbered pages, use “approximately” (not “ca.”), use “that is” (not “i.e.”); no recording both bibliographic and physical volumes (“5 volumes” not “8 v. in 5”) • Content type, media type, and carrier type are entered in an RDA record in 336, 337, and 338. This is an example for a printed book with text content: • 336: text|2rda content • 337: unmediated|2rda media • 338: volume|2rda carrier • 490,: Series transcription: no abbreviations; no rule to substitute arabic numerals for roman • 830: Series authorized form: Enter form of title and numbering pattern as instructed in the authority record.
Columbia University (1) • MPS Cataloging and Acquisitions Staff: • The cataloging rules currently in use (AACR2) are going to be superseded by a new set of rules called RDA (Resource Description and Access). They will affect mostly rules for description and access but will also affect subjects to some degree as well. RDA is intended to be more user and computer friendly and be applicable internationally. • Starting October 1 st RDA rules are going to be tested and Columbia was chosen as one of the testing sites. The test records are going to appear in OCLC and even though the test period ends in December 2010 some libraries may decide to continue to contribute RDA records to OCLC. A decision whether to implement the RDA rules nationwide will be made and announced in the summer of 2011. As a result OCLC will continue to have records cataloged under both sets of rules for some time to come.
• Records created using RDA rules may be encountered in OCLC and these introductory guidelines are intended to help staff recognize them. All such records will have $e RDA in the 040 field. Accept RDA cataloging found in OCLC as any other standard level cataloging. Do not try to revise RDA

Columbia University (3) • 4. The GMD [General Material Designator] in the field 245 is going to become obsolete. That is, the 245 field on an RDA record will no longer have $h electronic resource, or $h videorecording, etc. to differentiate the item from a printed book. When selecting an RDA record for ordering or cataloging for example, staff will need to examine the 300 field as well as three new fields (336-338) carefully to determine the format of a record. The following examples show the difference in the 300 fields between a printed book and electronic versions. Note the terms computer and online resource in fields 337 and 338 in addition to the 300 field for an e-book record and the terms two dimensional moving image and videodisc for a video record. • Book example: • 300 $a 86 pages, 21 unnumbered pages : $b illustrations, 1 folded
