What are resources?
What do you consider teaching and learning
resources to consist of?
Examples of resources
• Missing text
Free books
• Often, educational publishers are happy to
give away a free inspection copy (either in
book or electronic form) to teachers
• Just look for ‘inspection’ or ‘exam’ copy on
their websites
• If you give feedback via their website and
recommend the book to your learners,
they will often let you have more
Electronic and online resources
• Some courses are now delivered online, i.e.
where learners access a programme of
learning via a specialist website
• This is ideal for learners who might have
difficulty attending a formal programme, or
wish to learn at times convenient to them
• Missing text
Electronic and online resources
• Smartphones, tablets, cameras, recording
and audio requirement, videos

People as a resource
• People can be a very useful resource –
you are the main resource
• For example, a visiting speaker in your
specialist subject can help bring the
subject to life with anecdotes
• Colleagues who are specialists in other
areas for example literacy, numeracy and
ICT can be used to support various
aspects
Meeting the individual needs of
learners when using resources
• Whatever resources you use, it’s important to
ensure they cover all learning preferences and
meet the individual needs of your learners
• Missing text
• When using or creating resources, ensure
they promote equality of opportunity, reflect
diversity and challenge stereotypes
• For example, Missing text
How can you ensure your
resources meet the needs of your
learners?
Using resources
• During a session, you should always have
relevant resources such as stationery,
pens, paper, board markers and other
items to ensure it runs smoothly
• You could create a teacher’s toolkit, of
resources which you can carry around with
you
• The kit could contain the above items, plus
extra activities for learners to carry out in
case you have spare time during a session

Adapting resources
• Missing text
Adapting resources
you could…
• Adapt an activity to reach more than one
level of difficulty by challenging higher
level learners further
• Use different media with some learners,
for example creating a video, podcast or
webcast depending upon learning
preferences
• Produce handouts in a larger sized font or
print them on different coloured paper
Describe a resource
• You will now have the opportunity to talk
about a resource you would use with your
learners
• Describe what it is, why you would use it
and how you would use it
• Time limit – 2-3 minutes per person
Summary quiz
1. List four resources you could use for your
subject
2. State four items of electronic/online
