Unit 4
Is there any love at first sight? Why?
key
Yes. The factors for such love can be
analyzed as follows:
1) It is the human nature to love anything
beautiful;
2) Physical attraction is the first seed of
love;
3) Love in one’s heart is like a hidden fire;
4) Love, whatever form it takes, is usually
blind; …
Book 2
New Horizon College English
Unit 4
No. The reasons for absence of such
love can be deduced as follows:
1) Looks can be deceitful;
2) It takes time for true love to
grow;
3) Love is an integration of two
minds into one;
4) Such love is like a flash in the
pan; …

Unit 4
[For reference] Yes. 1) Love is a product of
communication. It is through lines of
communication that both sides know what insight
they can get into each other’s inner world, how
much they can have in common, and what their
unity will hold for either of them. 2) Love feeds
on mystery about each other. To any of us, what
attracts is just something mysterious about others.
Book 2
New Horizon College English
Unit 4
The same holds true for lovers, because
correspondence like this is often characteristic
of mystery about each other. 3) Love is born of
beauty in the distance. As an old Chinese saying
goes, distance produces beauty. A case in point
is the popular poem—You live at the head of the
Yangtze River while I live at its end; I miss you
day and night without seeing you ever; but the
truth is we drink water from the same river.
Book 2
New Horizon College English
Unit 4
No. 1) Love does not grow without contact
between two minds. It is well said that sparks of
love shine with frequent clashes of two hearts. No
collision of their ideas, no birth of true love. 2)
True love depends on acceptance of each other’s
demerits as well as on hunger for each other’s
merits. But such correspondence almost never
reflects the weaknesses of lovers.
Book 2
New Horizon College English
Unit 4
3) True love is based on the ups and downs of
lovers in daily life. Deprived of such rises and
falls in everyday life, lovers find no way to know,
understand, and respect each other from all
sides, thus making it impossible for both to be
sure whether they are a good match.

The History of Valentine’s Day
(情人节on Feb. 14)
St. Valentine's Day, as we know it today,
contains vestiges of both Christian and
ancient Roman tradition. So, who was
Saint Valentine and how did he become
associated with this ancient rite?
Book 2
New Horizon College English
Unit 4
One legend contends that Valentine was
a priest who served during the third
century in Rome. When Emperor
Claudius II decided that single men made
better soldiers than those with wives and
families, he outlawed marriage for young
men—his crop of potential soldiers.
Book 2
New Horizon College English
Unit 4
Valentine, realizing the injustice of the
decree, defied Claudius and continued
to perform marriages for young lovers
in secret. When Valentine's
actions were discovered,
Claudius ordered that he
be put to death.
Book 2
New Horizon College English
Unit 4
Other stories suggest that Valentine may
have been killed for attempting to help
Christians escape harsh Roman prisons
where they were often beaten and tortured.
According to one legend, Valentine
actually sent the first 'valentine' greeting
himself.
Book 2
New Horizon College English
Unit 4
While in prison, it is believed that
Valentine fell in love with a young girl—
who may have been his jailor's daughter—
who visited him during his confinement.
Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote
her a letter, which he signed 'From your
Valentine,' an expression that is still in use
today.
Book 2
New Horizon College English
Unit 4
Although the truth behind the Valentine
legends is murky, the stories certainly
emphasize his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic,
and, most importantly, romantic figure. It's no
surprise that by the Middle Ages, Valentine
was one of the most popular saints in England
and France.

Unit 4
I wrote a story about love, and I hope you like it.
The story is about a young soldier who is waiting to
see a woman he has fallen in love with. I suppose
it’s a lot like my other stories in that it has a happy
ending. You might laugh at me for writing stories
that are so sweet. But, you see, I am a deep believer
in love, and I am hopeful about everyone finding it.
Without love, I really don’t know what the purpose
of living would be.

[For reference]
Love may be many things to many
people, among which are as follows:
1) Love means sunshine that makes one
thirsty for the other.
2) Love means a game of emotion that
is always deprived of reason.
New Horizon College English
3) Love means a tree whose fruit is
sometimes
sweet and sometimes bitter.
4) Love means a bottle of wine with
which both
sides like being drunk.
5) Love means a river in which both
sides seek
to be drowned…

Unit 4
A Test of True Love
Para. 1a Six minutes to six, said the digital
clock over the information
desk in Grand Central
Station. John Blandford, a
tall young army officer,
focused his eyesight on the
clock to note the exact time.
Book 2
New Horizon College English
Unit 4
Para. 1b In six minutes he would see the
woman who had filled a special place in his
life for the past thirteen months,
a woman he had never seen, yet
whose written words had been
with him and had given him
strength without fail.
Book 2
New Horizon College English
Unit 4
Para. 2a Soon after he volunteered for
military service, he had received a book
from this woman. A letter, which wished
him courage and safety, came with the
book. He discovered that many of his
friends, also in the army, had received
the identical book from the woman,
Hollis Meynell.
Book 2
New Horizon College English
Unit 4
Para. 2b And while they all got strength
from it, and appreciated her support of
their cause, John Blandford was the only
person to write Ms. Meynell back. 句型 On
the day of his departure, to a destination
overseas where he would fight in the war,
he received her reply. Aboard the cargo
ship that was taking him into enemy
territory, he stood on the deck and read her
letter to him again and again.
Book 2
New Horizon College English
Unit 4
Para. 3 For thirteen months, she had faithfully
written to him. When his letters did not arrive,
she wrote anyway, without decrease. 句型 During
the difficult days of war, her letters nourished
him and gave him courage. As long as he
received letters from her, he felt as though he
could survive. 句型 After a short time, he
believed he loved her, and she loved him. It was
as if fate had brought them together.
Book 2
New Horizon College English
Unit 4
Para. 4a But when he asked her for a photo, she
declined his request. She explained her objection:
“If your feelings for me have any reality, any
honest basis, what I look like won’t matter.
Suppose I’m beautiful. I’d always be bothered by
the feeling that you loved me for my beauty, and
that kind of love would disgust me.
Book 2
New Horizon College English
Unit 4
Para. 4b Suppose I’m plain. Then I’d
always fear you were writing to me only
because you were lonely and had no one
else. Either way, I would forbid myself
from loving you. 句型 When you come to
New York and you see me, then you can
make your decision. Remember, both of
us are free to stop or to go on after that—
if that’s what we choose ...”
Book 2
New Horizon College English
Unit 4
Para. 5 One minute to six ... Blandford’s
heart leaped.
Para. 6 A young woman was coming
toward him, and he felt a connection with
her right away. Her figure was long and
thin, her spectacular golden hair lay back
in curls from her small ears. Her eyes were
blue flowers; her lips had a gentle
firmness. In her fancy green suit she was
like springtime come alive.
Book 2
New Horizon College English
Unit 4
Para.7 He started toward her, entirely
forgetting to notice that she wasn’t
wearing a rose, and as he moved, a small,
warm smile formed on her lips.
Para. 8 “Going my way, soldier?”
she asked.
Para. 9 Uncontrollably, he made one step
closer to her. Then he saw Hollis Meynell.
Book 2
New Horizon College English
Unit 4
Para. 10 She was standing almost directly
behind the girl, a woman well past
forty, and a fossil to his young eyes,
her hair sporting patches of gray.
She was more than fat; her thick
legs shook as they moved. But she wore
a red rose on her brown coat.
Book 2
New Horizon College English
Unit 4
Para. 11a The girl in the green suit was
walking quickly away and soon vanished
into the fog. Blandford felt as though his
heart was being compressed into a small
cement ball, so strong was his desire to
follow the girl, yet so deep was his
longing for the woman whose spirit had
truly companioned and brought warmth
to his own; 句型 and there she stood.
Book 2
New Horizon College English
Unit 4
Para. 11b Her pale, fat face was gentle
and intelligent; he could see that now.
Her gray eyes had a warm, kindly look.
Para. 12a Blandford resisted the urge to
follow the younger woman, though it was
not easy to do so. His fingers held the
book she had sent to him before he went
off to the war, which was to identify him
to Hollis Meynell.
Book 2
New Horizon College English
Unit 4
Para. 12b This would not be love.
However, it would be something
precious, something perhaps even less
common than love—a friendship for
which he had been, and would always be,
thankful. 句型
Para. 13 He held the book out toward the
woman.
Book 2
New Horizon College English
Unit 4
Para. 14a “I’m John Blandford, and
you—you are Ms. Meynell. I’m so glad
you could meet me. May I take you to
dinner?” The woman smiled. “I don’t
know what this is all about, son,” she
answered. “That young lady in the green
suit—the one who just went by—begged
me to wear this rose on my coat.
Book 2
New Horizon College English
Unit 4
Para. 14b And she said that
if you asked me to go out
with you, I should tell you
that she’s waiting for you in
that big restaurant near the
highway. She said it was
some kind of a test.”

Enjoy a poem:
Love
I love you not because of who you are,
but because of who I am when I am with you.
No man or woman is worth your tears,
and the one who is,
won't make you cry.
The worst way to miss someone is to be sitting right beside them
knowing you can't have them.
Never frown, even when you are sad,
because you never know who is falling in love with your smile.
To the world you may be one person,
but to one person you may be the world.

Don't waste your time on a man/woman,
who isn't willing to waste their time on you.
Just because someone doesn't love you the way you want them to,
doesn't mean they don't love you with all they have.
Don't try so hard,
the best things come when you least expect them to.
Maybe God wants us to meet a few wrong people
before meeting the right one,
so that when we finally meet the person,
we will know how to be grateful.
Don't cry because it is over,
smile because it happened.
