John Kay (1704-1780) invented the
“flying shuttle” used in cotton
weaving, the single most important
invention launching the industrial
revolution. Kay, however, was not
rewarded for his efforts. His house
was destroyed by “machine breakers,” who

out of a job. Kay was forced to flee to France
where he died a poor man.

 Ideas in mathematics, physics, and molecular

can be large.
