Topic
The principles of radio-frequency
analog photonics are reviewed with
special attention to long-haul analog
links. Novel analog modulation formats
are demonstrated as alternatives to
the intensity-modulation, directdetection technique. Photodiode
limitations and receiver designs are
discussed.
We propose novel generation technique
of IR-UWB pulse by linearly combining
two monocycles using different pulse
shapes. We experimentally demonstrate
DSP based BER measurement of 2
Gbps IR-UWB over multimode fiber for
in-building networks application.

A k-means algorithm for phase
recovery of three, 50 Mbaud, 8PSK
subcarrier multiplexed signals at 5
GHz for optical phase-modulated
radio-over-fiber is proposed and
experimentally demonstrated after 40
km of single mode fiber transmission.
Novel demodulation technique for radio
over fiber systems, transparent to RF
carrier frequency, employing coherent
detection and baseband digital signal
processing is presented for the first
time. Multi-gigabit signal demodulation
at 40GHz RF is demonstrated.

The arbitrary-frequency optical microwave or
millimeter (mm)-wave signals, ranging
from 25 to 325 -GHz with 25-GHz spacing, can
be simultaneously generated based on the
generation technology of multi-wavelength laser
source followed by a wavelength selected
switch
(WSS). These multi-wavelength signals are
realized by cascading a phase modulator (PM)
and a Mach-Zehnder intensity modulator. This
technology is capable of generating 11
multiwavelengths
from single CW lightwave with less than 2-dB
maximum power difference. One
reconfigurable WSS with one input and four
output ports is employed to select multiple
optical mm-wave signals with a minimal
frequency spacing of 25 GHz.

Radio-over-fiber, backhauling and
femtonodes are considered for
delivering mobile communication
services over access and home
networks. The RoF overlay is an
attractive alternative for optical access,
whereas femtonodes are a justified
option for home networks.
All-optical simultaneous up-conversion
of multiple, separate 1-Gb/s wireless
services at 60GHz and 64GHz mmwave band carried by one single
lightwave for in-building radio-over-fiber

proposed and experimentally

Topic
The radio over fiber system that
transmits 63-GHz-band and baseband
signals simultaneously based on WDM
system is proposed. 63-GHz tone is
generated by optical carrier
suppression method using MZM.
RSOAs are used for uplink and
downlink signal modulation.
BER performance and RF spectrum
are analyzed for observing downlink
and uplink transmission
characteristics. An error free
transmission of both downlink and
uplink signals are achieved after 23km SSMF.
We demonstrated the first transmission
of 750-Mb/s 16QAM-OFDM signal over
1-km SMF-28 and 6-m air-link with 60GHz ROF technology. The system
improvement and low-power efficiency
of RF transmitter are studied based on
the convolutional code.

Topic
We demonstrate error free
transmission of a 128 x 8 split and 60
km long-reach PON
system over 12 hours; a loss budget of
over 60-dB is achieved by combining a
hybrid burst-mode
optical fiber amplifier (OFA) and a
commercial G-PON system. Our
proposed hybrid burst-mode
OFA, which consists of a gain-clamped
praseodymium-doped fiber amplifier
(PDFA) and a fast
automatic gain controlled PDFA,
successfully achieves over 27-dB gain
and over 16.5-dB dynamic
range.
A single-fiber full-duplex hybrid
TDM/WDM-PON is demonstrated to
operate at
2.5/1.25 Gbps rates, with RSOA ONU. It
achieves high power budget (GPON
compliant) at a
distances higher than 20km, and serves
up to 1280 users.
