ATTENDANCE POLICY

Students are allowed 4 unexcused absences per class

Starting with the 5

th

unexcused absence, students will be denied credit and will have to attend Saturday School (Time/Date(s): TBD)

ABSENCE EXCUSAL POLICY

For absence to be excused, students must turn in written note with date of absence and reason within 48 hours of absence.

-Red Drop-box located in front office.

Student leaving campus or arriving late due to doctor’s appointment must provide doctor’s note.

If a student is going to be absent for more than 3 days, parents can contact the front office to request work from teachers.

Also, check teacher’s individual website for posted work.

Similar to a college major Designed to encourage students to select an area of specialization based on their interests

ARTS AND HUMANITIES

The Arts and Humanities endorsement is a curriculum path that allows for a student to focus deeply on courses directly related to fine arts, English literature, foreign languages, and social studies.

Careers

• Students interested in pursuing a career path in the entertainment industry or as an interpreter, or writer, for example, may want to consider the Arts and Humanities endorsement to guide course selection.

BUSINESS AND INDUSTRY

The Business and Industry endorsement is a curriculum path that allows a student to focus deeply on courses directly related to the business field.

Careers

Careers related to this field include: information technology specialist, communications, financial advisor, marketing specialist, architect, construction, and project management

PUBLIC SERVICES

The Public Services endorsement is a curriculum path that allows a student to focus deeply on courses directly related to the public service field, including the education field and government.

Careers

• There is a wide range of careers available in the public services sector, including serving as a police officer, firefighter, government official, human resource administrator, or teacher.

STEM

The STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) endorsement is a curriculum path that allows a student to focus deeply on courses related to science, technology, engineering, and math.

Careers

• There is wide range of careers available in the STEM field, including: engineer, computer programming, software developer, and research scientist.

• Students interested in pursuing an intentional path toward any of those careers should consider a STEM endorsement to guide course selection.

MULTIDISCIPLINARY

The Multiple Disciplinary endorsement allows for students to further study a foundation area or a wide range of curriculum sets. Careers

• Because of the broad nature of a multidisciplinary endorsement, students can choose from a wide variety of careers. If students are unsure of their career interests and wish to cross-study multiple subjects, they may want to consider the multidisciplinary endorsement to guide course selection.

PERFORMANCE ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS (OPTIONAL)

Students may earn a performance acknowledgement on the student’s diploma by achieving one of the following:

- Language other than English - PE or Athletics - Career Technology Education Classes - Fine Art - Elective * Although Health is a required course, we are requiring students to take it their junior and senior year, so that students are able to take the majority of required courses to obtain an endorsement at the entry level.

ENDORSEMENT FORM

1) Fill in the endorsement student has chosen (Endorsements can be changed at any time).

2) Write the courses selected on the course contract in the 9 th Grade column. Please leave the other columns blank (the Bowie counselor will help fill the rest out next year).

3) Make sure both student and parent/guardian sign at the bottom.

4) Turn in to middle school counselor.

ACADEMIC VS. PRE-AP

Pre-AP or Academic?

 Advanced Placement, or AP courses are college-level courses taken at the high school level. If a student is successful on an AP test, he or she can earn college credit.

 Dual credit classes can be taken through ACC.

 Pre-AP courses at the 9 th and 10 th grade level are designed to prepare students for the rigorous curriculum in the 11 th and 12 th grade AP courses.

 Pre-AP courses and AP courses are weighted.
