Macedonia By Alana, Sophie & Ashley Contents Macedonian arrival How they came Celebrations Dances Orthodox Churches Famous people Food Pets Clothing Introduction Macedonia is a very complex culture made of religion , culture , celebrations , food and art. Macedonian Arrival Macedonians came to Australia between the 1960’s & 1970’s. Most Macedonians came because of war, they were poor and for a job. Marie Sekutkovskiwas born on the village of Vivcani near Ohrid in Yugoslavian Macedonia. I was married to Zivko, a tailor, in 1942. Zivko served in the Yugoslav army against the Germans. At the end of the war they pulled all the Germans from Yugoslavia after we got free. Zivko’s brother went to Italy and got married and went to live in Australia . My husband said, ‘I can’t live with these communists’. He wrote to his brother and the brother obtained permission for Zivko to migrate to Australia. Celebrations Traditional Macedonian celebrations involve dying eggs for Easter to represent the blood of Jesus Christ. For Christmas we have a huge feast to celebrate the lord’s birthday. These Traditions originated in Macedonia and have become part of our Australian culture today. Dances A Macedonian dance includes dancing in a circle and holding hands this can happen at a wedding or birthday parties. The Orthodox Churches The first orthodox church was built by Macedonians in Australia. Famous Macedonian Australians Famous Macedonian people include football and AFL players. Also a musician Nick Malceski, Chris Joannou, Mile sterjovski and Peter Daicos. Nick Malceski Food Macedonian food includes Maznik, Burek, Patulitzi, Baklava, Ajvrac[ which is capsicum relish], Piparece paulnaty [ Capsicums stuffed with meat, rice, vegetables and stock]. Maznik Pets Macedonian pets include The Tatra Shepherd Dog, the Macedonian shepherd to name a few. The Macedonian Tatra Shepard dog is in Australia and Macedonia. Some people have them as pets. Clothing Macedonian clothing can be found in traditional folk costumes, Macedonian wool dense knotted embroidered traditional vest and embroidery .
