» Knisely, K. 2013. A Student Handbook for Writing in Biology. 4th ed.
Sinauer/MacMillan (Pechenik 7th or 8th editions are OK too!) Used for ALL
Bio Courses!
• No Laboratory Manual, handouts or visit: plantphys.info
» Laboratory and Writing Handouts, if lost, can be downloaded/printed
» Depends upon organism availability, readiness, and behavior
» Username: and Password: on white board…please write it in!
• Three-Ring Binder, Zipper Pouch, Pencil with Eraser

•Absence any Quiz: 0 score in spite of situation

Laboratory Worksheets
• Must bring worksheet to lab class if previously distributed
• Must hand in worksheet by due date shown on on-line syllabus
»Due dates to be announced in class: attendance critical
»Worksheet filled out in ink: 10% penalty--bring your pencil!
»Late penalty: 10% per day starting at start of class on due date!
»After graded assignments are returned to lab classmates: 100% penalty
• No makeup of laboratory exercises ever!
Missed Laboratory exercise = 0 on corresponding worksheet(s)
NEVER schedule physician or court dates on lab days!
• Dissection and killing of organisms is a routine aspect of this
course…if you will not do this, you need to see me ASAP.
• Laboratory worksheets provide 20% of course grade

Laboratory Writing Assignments
• There are six writing assignments, five coming from lab
exercises…see orange highlights on on-line syllabus
• You must hand in each writing assignment by the due date
»Due dates to be announced in class: attendance critical
»Writing assignments must be computer generated and printed out
»There are severe penalties for plagiarism!! Don’t do it!
»We share data with lab partners…but calcs, graphics, writing on our own!
»Late penalty: 10% per day starting at end of quiz when due!
»After graded assignments are returned to classmates: 100% penalty
• Failing to submit any one writing assignment results in course
failure.
• Scores below 65% must be resubmitted until they make the
benchmark! Only the first submission counts in the grade. The
resubmission deadline is a real DEAD line!
• Writing assignments provide 20% of course grade, if all of the
assignments are submitted/resubmitted.

Late Paper Penalty Policy
Your first writing assignment is due on Friday...
• Handed in Friday at 8 AM = full credit
• Handed in Friday at 8:05 AM = 1 day late = 10% penalty
• Handed in Monday at 8 AM = 4 days late = 40% penalty
• Handed in Monday at 8:05 AM = 5 days late = 50%
penalty
• Handed in after any paper has been returned by
instructor to first student = too late = 0%
If the late assignment is a writing project, then, even though it
may be worth 0% because of its tardiness, you still MUST
hand it in at a passing level (65%) or you fail the course!

Comprehensive Final Exam
•Given during Final Exam Week (May 4 8-10 AM in S-231)
•Clear your work, travel, summer, etc. schedules now!
•Questions based on the entire course (comprehensive)

instructor to assign points to each student based on
participation.

methods OTHER than the use of your clicker
• Using your Clicker in lecture will generate the majority
of these points—bring it to every class!

for gathering participation data

» In written work you paraphrase rather than quote, and always

»There is no special treatment for commuting students
»Is your vehicle reliable?
»Are your tires capable of driving in snow?
»Is there a family member who can drive you for “Plan B”
»Do you have a “Plan C” carpool with other students in
town?
»Are you a courageous driver in snow, sleet, ice, pouring
rain?
»Parking is limited on our campus…arrive early to find a spot
»Plan on walking time from your parking spot to class
»Hand in papers before a deadline to avoid late
penalties!! Especially if foul weather is forecast!
