PURPOSE: To provided an overview of the procedure for screening and
evaluating prospective students who desire to become active duty Medical
Service Corps officers so that they become active duty social work officers
by attending the Army MSW Program.

Program Overview
• Army MSW Program was created to serve as a force
•

multiplier.
Program applicants are equipped to practice social work
in a military community during their MSW and phase II
internship
Program includes 2 phases:
– Academic phase 1 (14 months)
– Internship phase (24 months)
Students incur a 5 years and 2 months service
obligation

Program Overview
• Establish slots in the Army-Fayetteville State University
•

(FSU) MSW program for active duty enlisted,
commissioned officers, and civilians seeking to become
active duty Army social work officers.
Compete with other USAREC accessions to fill up to 30
program slots.
All applications are pre-screened by the Army MSW
Program at AMEDD Center & School prior to being
reviewed by the USAREC selection board.
• Once the selection board approves applicants, selectees
will be approved by Fayetteville State University for
admission.

Program Prerequisites
• All applicants must:
– Have a liberal arts undergraduate degree (Preferably in
the social or behavioral sciences)
– Have an overall undergraduate GPA of 3.0
– Score 290 (combination of quantitative & verbal) on GRE
within 5 years of program start date
– Be able to fulfill the service obligation
– Meet the requirements to become active duty
– Be approved by admission committees at AMEDD Center
& School and Fayetteville State University
– Meet the legal requirements to become a commissioned
MSC officer

• Civilian applicant contacts local recruiter
• Recruiter determines eligibility for active duty
• Recruiter prepares applicant’s accession packet with

copies of undergraduate transcript, personal statement,
letters of recommendation, and Graduate Record Exam
scores
Recruiter submits original copy of packet to AMEDDC&S
for pre-screen and approval (3 September 2012)
Recruiter submits accession packet to USAREC prior to
5 Feb 2013 board review
AMEDDC&S informs USAREC of applicants approved
(tentatively) for admission by AMEDDC&S admission
committee

• Works with local AMEDD Healthcare Recruiter to

undergraduate transcript, personal statement, letters of
recommendation, Graduate Record Exam scores,
conditional letters of release, and other required
documents per the most recent USAREC MILPER
message
Submits original copy of packet to AMEDDC&S for prescreen and approval (3 September 2012)

Part II
• Civilian life gain and enlisted selected applicants are

commissioned and receive orders to attend the Basic
Officer Leadership Course (BOLC).
After successfully completing BOLC, selectees attend
the MSW Program
Students attend phase I (14 months) of the MSW
Program
After successful completion of phase 1, graduates
attend phase 2 (24 months) of the MSW Program at a
select internship site.
