technology?

3 Rs: An Obsolete Skill? Or Not?
In an article by Seymour
Papert, he states that the 3
Rs are going to become
obsolete because of how
fast technology has been
moving. He believes reading
will still be important but
not as important as it once
was.
Once college instructor says
that technology should be a
tool and not a crutch. She
beleives that people should
be able to know how to get
along without technology as
with the 3 Rs in education.
What the People Think
In a study that was
conducted by the
Partnership for 21st
Century Skills group, they
found that 66% of the
public they polled believe
that more than the 3 Rs are
necessary to be taught in
school.
The study also said that
71% believe that technology
needs to be stressed more
because of the way the
world is going right now.
Integrating the 3 Rs and Technology
Technology can be used to help teach and stress the
importance of the 3 Rs.
No Child Left Behind states that students should be
accustomed to technology by the time they leave the 8th
grade. Using technology to teach the 3 Rs will help solve
both the technology and 3 Rs issue.
What is more Important? 3R's or
Technology?
Various people have weighed in on which of the two
education should focus on, but if one looks at all the
evidence and reads all the opinions, it is clear what the true
answer is: Both.
Both are needed in society today. Technology is a staple in
society, but in order to operate it the way it was meant to,
the 3 Rs are needed.
Generation Z
Many have labeled the people born between the early
1990's and the early 2000's as Generation Z, or Net
Generation.
These children make up the poplulation of today's
schools.
This is a generation that does not understand what it is
like not having the Internet at the tips of their fingers!
Generation Z
Many students of today do not know what it's like going
to a library to check out a book to do research. They
simply know going a library to log onto a computer and
Google whatever it may be they are looking for.
This type of student presents many obstacles for us as
educators.
Today's Student
Today's students have become accustomed to TMI(too
much information) in their everyday lives. Rarely do we
turn on a news channel and see one story. While the
broadcaster may be reporting on one story there are 3
screens in the background with news stories on them
and headlines running across the bottom of the screen.
Today's Student
Today's student has become very good at using
technology to gather a great deal of information
quickly. The worry comes when we ask "How much are
they able to extract, evaluate and express new
information?"
How to do we as educators help them learn the 3 R's
while still using their technological strengths to our and
their advantage?
Teaching the 3Rs and Technology
The foundation of Education are the three 3R's, without
them technology wouldn't be applicable
Students however need more than just the basic skills of
the 3 Rs, schools need to incorporate a broader range of
skills into core academic content
Therefore, once the 3R's are established as the foundation
of education , technology can be incorporated to teach
them
Teaching the 3 Rs and Technology
In education the traditional basic skills are vital, with
literacy remaining a fundamental gateway skill for learning.
However, schools have shifted away from the "back to
basics" movement of the 1990s and placing more emphsis on
computers and technology
In many schools across the country there is a recognition
that technology should be integrated into day to day
instruction
I
Teaching the 3 Rs and Technology
Technology must be an integral part of teaching and
learning of all academic subjects, not add ons to the
curriculum
Classroom practices will be transformed to acheive this
Students will learn to apply critical thinking skills and
technology to the context
The basic skills and skills of the 21st century should be
complementary to each other, they are vital for the futute
prosperity of out students
Teaching the 3 Rs and Technology
Studies show that students who learn through computer
based instruction score higher on achievement tests than
those without
The best way to teach our students is to incorporate
computer and technology skills into the core academic
subjects and throughout all education support
systems, including standards and assessments, curriculum
and instruction and learning environments.
