instruction

To organize the Common Core Standards for instruction

To provide a scope and sequence for grade level
Common Core standards

To provide an online easy-access curriculum framework

THE JOURNEY
Project first proposed to the Department of Public Instruction – funds and
mechanisms were not available

Project was then proposed to the 12 CESAs as a collaborative project, but funds
were limited

Then – at the urging of CESA 7 administrators, the CESA 7 Board of Control was
approached.

The project was funded in April 2011 with CESA 7 Board of Control approval of
internal funds

Design work was initiated in spring 2011

Coordinated by the CESA 7 School Improvement Team

Strategies to Learn the Common Core
Standards:
Go to www.corestandards.org to study
them
The Common Core
Standards
represent
important “shifts”
in America
education. It’s
important to build
content
understanding
about these
expectations for
teaching and
learning
7
A WORD ABOUT THE CC STANDARDS
They were developed through significant research

They are designed with intentional learning progressions
– within and across grade levels

They are explicit, although dense with complexity

They will be assessed in the summative assessments
CESA 7

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Therefore … the Common Core standards
should NOT be …

Rewritten, revised

Selected from – choose some and not others

Prioritized or narrowed for the universal curriculum

Added to, without GREAT care by content experts who deeply
understand the progressions
8
CURRICULUM COMPANION
Based on the Common
Core State Standards as
published
(www.corestandards.org)

All core standards are
addressed

When followed, provides

THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS
CURRICULUM COMPANION APPROACH
Focus on English Language Arts - Note that Literacy in the Content
Areas will be embedded in the Social Studies and Science Curriculum
Companions

Integrates all four strands of ELA standards – reading, writing,
speaking/listening & language within sequenced inquiry modules

Organized by sequenced “overarching enduring understandings” that
are the same for all grades (K-12)

Provides a scope and sequence that includes every Common Core
standard by grade level, K-12

Reflects a “workshop instructional model” for K-5 literacy and a
“gradual release of responsibility” instructional approach for 6-12
literacy

Provides open fields for local work

THE MATHEMATICS CURRICULUM
COMPANION APPROACH
Emphasizes the “sense-making” importance in the math
core standards
 Weaves in the mathematics practice standards at the
lesson level
 Addresses the importance of expanding the standards
“unpacking” to three additional elements: related
standards, notations, and student language for discourse
 Provides a scope and sequence that includes Common
Core standard by grade level, K-12
 Provides open fields for local work
