SAFE-T
. . .is to be used to formally evaluate
classroom-based teachers.
. . .is not to be used to evaluate school
guidance counselors, library media
specialists, or speech-language
therapists. These groups of educators
have separate ADEPT Performance
Standards and evaluation models.
4
SAFE-T
 . . .is the most recent ADEPT formal
(summative) evaluation model for
classroom-based teachers.
 . . . is replacing the original evaluation
models:
TEAM
STEP
FEAT
TEP
etc.
5
SAFE-T

four domains (Planning, Instruction,
Environment, and Professionalism),

SAFE-T Domains and APSs

SAFE-T Evidence
Evidence is the documentation of
teaching performance.
SAFE-T templates--i.e., standardized
guides for recording evidence--are
available:
– Teacher templates (TTs) for teachers
– Evaluator templates (ETs) for evaluators
SAFE-T includes six types of evidence.
12
SAFE-T Evidence
1. Long-range plan and teacher reflections
[TT1]
2. Unit work sample and teacher reflections
[TT2]
3. Classroom observation records [ET1]
4. Teacher reflections on observed lessons
[TT3]
5. Professional performance review(s) [ET2]
6. Professional self-assessment [TT4]
13
SAFE-T Evidence
 All completed evidence is placed in a
dossier.
 Judgments are based on the
evidence contained in the dossier.
14
Which SAFE-T results
will be used?
Your preliminary evaluation results are
intended to serve as a sort of “midterm progress report” for you.
Only your final evaluation results are
reported to the state.
15
Passing SAFE-T
In order to “pass” SAFE-T, you must meet
the requirements in all four domains:
 In the Planning Domain, you must meet at
least 10 of the 11 key elements.
 In the Instruction Domain, you must meet
at least 11 of the 12 key elements.
 In the Environment Domain, you must meet
at least 5 of the 6 key elements.
 In the Professionalism Domain, you must
meet at least 4 of the 5 key elements.
16
How will my SAFE-T
results be used?
Your SAFE-T results will be used for
different purposes, depending on your
– certificate level
– contract level, and
– previous performance.
17
How will my SAFE-T
results be used?
If you (1) hold an initial teaching certificate (or the
equivalent), (2) are employed under an annual contract,
and (3) are undergoing SAFE-T for the first time, then
 if you pass SAFE-T, you will have met the ADEPT
requirements for eligibility to advance to a professional
teaching certificate and a continuing contract.
 if you do not pass SAFE-T, you will be eligible to
attempt SAFE-T one additional time during a subsequent
academic year, either in your present school district or in
another school district in the state. You must pass SAFE-T
in order to be eligible for certificate and contract
18
advancement.
How will my SAFE-T
results be used?
If you (1) hold a professional teaching certificate based
on out-of-state reciprocity, (2) are employed under an
annual contract, and (3) are undergoing SAFE-T for the
first time, then
 if you pass SAFE-T, you will have met the ADEPT
requirements for eligibility to advance to a continuing
contract.
 if you do not pass SAFE-T, you will be eligible to
attempt SAFE-T one additional time during a subsequent
academic year, either in your present school district or in
another school district in the state. You will be allowed up
to two attempts pass SAFE-T in order to be eligible for 19
contract advancement.
How will my SAFE-T
results be used?
If you (1) hold an initial teaching certificate (or the
equivalent), (2) are employed under an annual contract,
and (3) have failed an ADEPT formal evaluation during a
previous school year, then
 if you pass SAFE-T, you will have met the ADEPT
requirements for eligibility to advance to a professional
teaching certificate and a continuing contract.
 if you do not pass SAFE-T, the state must suspend your
teaching certificate for a minimum of two years, and you
will need to complete additional course work, as specified
by the state, in order to have your certificate reinstated.
20
How will my SAFE-T
results be used?
If you (1) hold a professional teaching certificate and (2)
are employed under a continuing contract, your district
may use your final SAFE-T results as a factor in
determining your eligibility for continued employment in
the district.
