Education Today
Accountability
Standards-Based Learning and Assessment
Data, Interim Assessments
Individualized Learning and Differentiated Instruction
Physical Activity and Academic Achievement Link
CCSS and APPR take effect 2012-2013
ALL teachers will be assessed under this system
Common Core State Standards
(CCSS)
Literacy and Math Standards
Not necessarily inter-disciplinary teaching
Literacy WITHIN your subject
Adjustment may not be needed on large scale
Some elements will be added to teaching system
Most difficult aspect is matching standard to activity or
lesson portion

CCSS – ELA for Technical Subjects
Physical Education is a Technical Subject!
English Language Arts
Standards for grades PreK-5 in Reading, Writing, Language,
Speaking and Listening in both ELA and
History/Science/Technical Subjects
Standards for grades 6-12 in Reading and Writing for
History/Science/Technical Subjects
Examples for ELA CCSS
RST.9-10.7: Translate quantitative or technical information
expressed in words in a text into visual form (e.g., a table or
chart)and translate information expressed visually or
mathematically (e.g., in an equation) into words.
RST.6-8.3: Follow precisely a multistep procedure when
carrying out experiments, taking measurements, or
performing technical tasks.
WHST.6-8.10: Write routinely over extended time frames
(time for reflection and revision) and shorter time frames (a
single sitting or a day or two) for a range of disciplinespecific tasks, purposes, and audiences
SL.2.4: Tell a story or recount an experience with
appropriate facts and relevant, descriptive details, speaking
audibly in coherent sentences.
L.2.6: Use words and phrases acquired through
conversations, reading and being read to, and responding
to texts, including using adjectives and adverbs to describe
(e.g., When other kids are happy that makes me happy ).
CCSS – Math
Standards for Grades K-8
Individual Subjects in High School
Physical Education not accountable for Math CCSS
Examples for Math CCSS
1.OA.1: Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve
word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from,
putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with
unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using objects, drawings,
and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to
represent the problem.
2.G.1: Recognize and draw shapes having specified
attributes, such as a given number of angles or a given
number of equal faces.1 Identify triangles, quadrilaterals,
pentagons, hexagons, and cubes.
6.RP.1: Understand the concept of a ratio and use ratio
language to describe a ratio relationship between two
quantities. For example, “The ratio of wings to beaks in the
bird house at the zoo was 2:1, because for every 2 wings
there was 1 beak.” “For every vote candidate A received,
candidate C received nearly three votes.”
A-CED.2: Create equations in two or more variables to
represent relationships between quantities; graph equations
on coordinate axes with labels and scales.
