Belief in DSTU Research

We at GTU believe, it is the NEED of the
hour to develop proper Organization
Structure, deploy necessary Manpower, and
develop a system of Governance by which
GTU is able to well integrate education,
training and research in its four disciplines
namely :




Engineering
Pharmacy
Management and
Computer Application
At the level of Diploma, Degree, PG and
Research Programs

Organization Structure
Organizational structure is essentially “how job tasks are
formally divided, grouped and co-ordinated”*.
 Top Management needs to address 6 key elements
when they design an Organizational structure:

◦
◦
◦
◦
◦
◦
work specialization
departmentalization
chain of command
span of control
centralization & decentralization, and
formalization

Organizational Challenges faced
by GTU
Part VI
GTU is the Largest University in
Gujarat
For the smooth functioning of a vast University like GTU,
which caters to the entire field of Engineering, Pharmacy,
MBA Programs and Computer Applications (MCA), a welldesigned organizational structure is not only essential, but
absolutely imperative.
 GTU has about 4,00,000 students, a large number of
Bachelors and Master’s programs, and robust doctoral
programs. It has about 500 colleges affiliated from all
nooks and corners of Gujarat.
 Hence, for such a large University it is quite essential that the
(proposed) organizational structure is developed considering
successful functioning of India’s, Asia’s and World’s some of
the best Universities and educational institutions mentioned
in the review.

29th Sept, 2013 (contd.)
GTU should introduce compulsory subjects of
communication skill, Personality Development
and Human Values in each stream
 It is possible to explore possibility of commencing
Distance Education Mode of academic
programmes
 GTU may think offering Multi-entry –Multi exit
facilities wherein the students undergo 2
semesters of a graduate programme and quit with
a diploma and again after a brief industry
exposure rejoin for remaining graduation period.

In a Nutshell…
Part IX
In a Nutshell…
GTU’s proposed Organization Structure may be Matrixbased, a mix of hierarchy at Head Quarter, with
Decentralization at Regional Level with sufficient Autonomy
to each Head of the Function / Department / Wing / Section
–
 to take decisions and be responsible for its own decisions,
 Within the framework of authority and responsibility,
accountability, chain of command, inter-personal relationship
and team-based approach
◦ (like today’s public sector Banks that have become more
efficient, wide-spread, customer-centric and profitable than
many private sector Banks).
