fruit is Jackfruit.

Latin Name: Artocarpus heterophyllus
Other Names: Jakfruit
Type: Tree
Native to: Bangladeshi, Indian and Southeastern Asian
rainforests.
Fruit: The jackfruit is the largest edible tree fruit in the world.
It is 1-2' long and can weight as much as 75 pounds. The
spiky skin is yellow-green. The pulp inside is yellow. The
jackfruit will sometimes have nice smell.
The jackfruit is related to the breadfruit and the marang. A
distant relative is the fig tree.
Size: The tree can grow over 90' tall.
Hardiness: Zones 9b-11
Propagation: Seeds (which can take up to 8
weeks for germination). Grafting is also used.
Uses: The jackfruit is often eaten fresh or
used in food dishes. The seeds are also
edible and may be boiled or roasted.
Test of Jackfruit
The flesh of the jackfruit is starchy, fibrous and is a source
of dietary fiber. The flavour is similar to a tart banana.
Varieties of jackfruit are distinguished according to the
characteristics of the fruits' flesh. In Brazil, three varieties
are recognized. These are: jaca-dura, or "hard" variety,
which has firm flesh and the largest fruits that can weight
between 15 and 40 kilograms each; jaca-mole, or "soft"
variety, which bears smaller fruits, with softer and sweeter
flesh; and jaca-manteiga, or "butter" variety, which bears
sweet fruits, whose flesh has a consistency intermediate
between the "hard" and "soft" varieties.
Ripe Jackfruit
Ripe jackfruit is naturally sweet with subtle
flavouring. It can be used to make a variety of
dishes including custards, cakes, halo-halo
and more. Ripe jackfruit arils are sometimes
seeded, fried or freeze-dried and sold as
jackfruit chips.
Health benefits of Jackfruit
Although many who eat jackfruit love it for its
delicious taste, quite a few are unaware of the
health benefits of jackfruit. Jackfruit contains
Vitamin A, Vitamin C, thiamin, riboflavin,
calcium, potassium, iron, sodium, zinc and

Jackfruit is a rich source of potassium with 303
milligram found in 100 grams of jackfruit. Studies
show that food rich in potassium helps to lower
blood pressure. Therefore, jackfruit has the health
benefit of providing relief for anyone who suffers
from high blood pressure.
