– Operation: 54 (2-27 man crews)
– SLWT: 32 (4-8 man crews)
• Length: Goal: Pier Head outside of surf zone with at least 20 ft. depth
of water.
• Description: 8’x 40’x 5’ (pontoon) modular sections cantilevered over
the water
• Operational Requirements: (Erect 3000 ft. in 7 days)
 handle cargo from both sides of pier head
 erect from shore using cantilever erection with 175 ton cranes
 operate in sea state 3 (5ft waves) , survive sea state 5 (12 ft
waves)
 beach gradient (not less than 1:24 or greater than 1:300)
Elevated Causeway System
(ELCAS(M) )
• Planning Factors:
 20 ft at pier head
 prefer soft bottom (sand/clay)
 need shore side area for staging, marshalling, logistics
 bottom of roadway pontoon 7 ft above mean high water
• Modular BF:
 3 pontoons wide x 3 pontoons long (24 x 120 w/o powered
section, carry up to 298,000 lbs)
 5 pontoons wide x 3 pontoons long (40 x 120 w/o powered
section, carry up to 498,000 lbs)
• Used to carry cranes, pontoons, pile bins
Elevated Causeway System
(ELCAS(M) )

• Pile Size: 24” OD (1/2” thickness) steel piles in 38 ft length
( fits in ISO containers)
Elevated Causeway System
(ELCAS(M) )
• Installation:
– Bring ELCAS (M) materials ashore using 3 or 5 wide MCWF or other lighterage
– Prepare marshalling areas and beach ramp site. Beach ramp hole is 79 ft back from
high-water mark and 7 ft above above high water mark.
– (6) P40G Pontoon sections (3 wide x 2 long) are placed for beach ramp. Maintain
7.5o angle. 6 piles are used to secure ramp. Piles are cut 3 ft above deck.
– Roadway consists of 3 wide P40G pontoons (201 for 3000 ft). Transition from
beach ramp to roadway is via 9 angled connectors. Fasten 2 pontoons side by side,
lift them into place, cantilevered out, add third section.
– Construct pier head once the proper distance is obtained. Pier head piles are cut 2
inches below the deck level. Pierhead crane piles cut 1 inch above deck level.
(Specific pontoons in certain locations)
– The turntables, lights, throughput cranes. (installation of 175 ton cranes),
navigation lights, life lines, nets, life ring buoys (every 80 ft opposite sides)
– OPS: The turned tractor trailer is loaded on the turntable. Vehicle traffic is on the
left hand side.
