What is OER?
•
OER has been defined as
‘digitized materials offered freely and openly for educators, students and selflearners to use and re-use for teaching, learning and research’
Flora and William Hewitt Foundation, 2006.
•
Effectively, this means anything that is an educational resource available
openly, i.e. under an open licence.
•
Large global movement of institutions releasing OERs
– MIT’s Open Course ware (OCW)
– Open University’s Open Learn
– JISC/ HEA managed Hefce funded projects 2009 – to date.
Change of practice rather than revolution?
Academics have always been sharing, now a legal manner?
2
Open Licences
Most OERs are released under a
licence.
Attribution only
Attribution share alike
Attribution non-commercial
Attribution non-commercial share alike
Attribution no derivative
Attribution non commercial no derivative.
There are other open licences available such as the Open
Government Licence & GNU.

Where can I find OER?
Lots of universities supply/ produce/ release OERs:
• Stanford, MIT, Michigan …..
• The Open University,
• Sheffield, Oxford, Loughborough, Nottingham
• Lots of the Subject Centres involved - Engineering, Bio Sciences, Physical
Sciences, MSOR……
Mostly via third party sites:
• JORUM
• YouTube (via JISC projects)
• Flickr
• Slideshare
• iTunesU
• Merlot

FETLAR Project
The FETLAR project addresses the challenge associated with students'
mathematical skills and competencies on transition into higher education and the
need to raise the retention rate of first-year students on science and engineering
courses.
• First Year Mathematics Transition Module based on Initial Assessment
• Algorithms and their Efficiency
• Exploring the Tidal Cycle
Other resources…..
• Algebraic methods- Calculus (Integration)
