1880s
Joseph Boyer, a recycler of building materials, invented the
first practical air-powered chipping hammer
1894
J.W. Duntley, a foundry foreman, realised the potential of the
Boyer hammer and founded Chicago Pneumatic Tool Co.
1901
Backed by Charles M. Schwab, president of U.S.Steel,
Chicago Pneumatic Tool Co. was formally incorporated
1904
A line of rotary air tools and hoists was commenced in
Cleveland with percussion type tools built in Detroit

1904
The first electric drill was patented
1910
Introduced the gasoline driven “Little Giant” truck
1914
CP was the world’s fourth largest manufacturer of
commercial trucks (the Coca-Cola company was one of
the largest users of the “Little Giant”)
1918
CP was listed on the New York Stock Exchange

1940
Demand for air tools heightened as CP Impact Wrenches
became a critical element in building much of the heavy
equipment for WWII
1943
May 29, the Saturday Evening Post
used a Norman Rockwell painting of
“Rosie the Riveter” on the cover.
The female aircraft worker was
eating her lunch with a CP Riveting
Hammer in her lap and her foot
resting on the book, “Mein Kampf”,
written by Hitler.

1949
A new plant was built in Utica to cater for the increased
demand
1954
Introduction of torque controlled tools for the automobile,
appliance and electronics industry
1964
Introduction of the first “silenced” demolition tools
1981
Acquired a mobile distributor of automotive tools to expand
their service to this industry

CP was purchased by Atlas Copco
1992
CP was divisionalised into 3 areas of focus; Automotive,
Industrial and Construction
1997
Headquarters and manufacturing operations move to
Rock Hill, South Carolina
1998
Chicago Pneumatic, Desoutter and Georges Renault form
Alliance Tools Division within Atlas Copco

2001
Alliance Tools renamed Chicago Pneumatic Division with
each company logo now incorporating the CP circle
2001
On December 28, Chicago
Pneumatic celebrated 100
years
2002
January 1, the Australian Sales Company incorporated the
Desoutter business to form the Chicago Pneumatic
Division from within Atlas Copco Tools

Aberdeen, Scotland, produced Consolidated
Pneumatic’s range of air tools for word-wide
markets. 162,000 sq, ft of floor space.
Current location, Rock Hill, South Carolina, USA.
Incorporating Chicago Pneumatic headquarters and
some of the Automotive tool assembly.
Utica, New York, USA, one of the largest air tool
manufacturing facilities in the world. More than a
half-million sq. ft. of floor space.
