Journal Retention & JSTOR Journals
Due to diminishing use of print journals,
Alkek Library has reviewed its journal
retention policy, i.e. criteria to keep or
withdraw journals.
•
Print Journals to Keep
Journals/issues to which the library does
not have full-text electronic access
 Journals/issues with no permanent/postcancellation access rights
 Journals/issues that are not adequately
preserved for future access
 High print use journals/issues, and
 Image-rich journals

Library may withdraw…
journals/issues that fulfill every one of these
criteria:
 The library has reliable full-text access to
the journal, with perpetual/post-cancellation
rights
 The digital versions are complete, of highquality and in formats that facilitate
preservation
 There is sufficient print and digital backup of
content, and a sustainable plan to maintain it
We have such content, in JSTOR!
JSTOR (Journal Storage) Project is a
collaborative preservation effort by
libraries and the Mellon Foundation.
 The purpose of JSTOR is to convert back
issues of print journals into electronic
format to save libraries space (and the
capital costs associated).


 High-quality digitization process
 Content and metadata are in formats that
can be converted to new formats as they
develop.
 JSTOR has been certified as a trusted
digital repository by the Center for
Research Libraries.


Electronic files are stored in three redundant
data centers.
Archive Capital Fees libraries pay to JSTOR
cover the cost for preservation and
migration of digital content.
JSTOR works with institutions
knowledgeable in the preservation of paper
to store multiple copies of the original print
publications (California Digital Library,
Harvard).
What Is Being Withdrawn?
Although many libraries have withdrawn
all JSTOR journals, at this time we are
withdrawing only a subset.
 Criteria:

◦ Both page-verified print repositories, Harvard
and CDL, must be storing over 95% of the
journal issues.
◦ Low number of images: less than one image
per twenty pages.
What Is Being Withdrawn?
213 journals that are duplicated in the
JSTOR database
 Only print volumes currently covered in
JSTOR are on the withdraw list
 There will be NO LOSS OF ACCESS to
the issues
 Current subscriptions to these journals
are not impacted.

What are other libraries doing
with their JSTOR issues?
SERIALST listserv 2009 – 13 responses:
 9 libraries discarded all JSTOR journals
except high-use/high-graphics journals
 3 libraries moved volumes to off-site
storage (and reported minimal use of
these volumes)
 1 retained for 10 years then discarded
Our Plan
1. Make JSTOR Withdrawal List available to
faculty, allow feedback through October.
II. Contribute withdrawn issues to print
repositories or JSTOR. Recycle issues not
needed.
III Repeat process annually or as needed as
more journals meet the criteria.
