Environmental Health and Safety Department

Overview

The Department of Environmental Health and Safety is a collaborative services unit devoted to ensuring the health and safety of all UT Tyler employees, students and visitors.

Services We Provide:

Fire Life Safety

     

Hazardous and Biological Waste Program Laboratory Safety Departmental Safety Liaison Program Indoor Air Quality Safety Support of Student Activities Ergonomics

Fire and Life Safety

 In 2014, we completed fire drills in every major building on all three campuses. Fire and Life Safety is more than just fire drills. It involves monthly inspections of emergency lights(1868), EXIT signage(551), fire extinguishers (866), AED units(33), safety showers(37) and eyewashes(83), across three campuses.

Hazardous Waste and Bio-Waste Program

  Laboratory wastes, whether chemical or biological, can pose a significant risk to human health and the environment if not handled correctly. The University of Texas at Tyler EHS Department is committed to making sure that all wastes generated on it’s campuses are identified, contained, and disposed of in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, and best management practices.

Laboratory Safety Program

Departmental Safety Liaison Program (DSL)

  

Departmental safety representatives in this program are the “conduits” between the safety department, emergency operations plans, university senior management. These are key positions to ensure the safety and welfare of personnel within each department in the event of an emergency.

EHS Department investigates building indoor air quality concerns Most indoor air quality problems fall into a select few categories

Safety Support of Student Events and Activities

EHS Department actively assists with planning, of many student events throughout each semester such as:

    

Concrete Canoe Races Homecoming Chili Cook-off Intramural Sporting Events Walking Trails and Bike Paths Training of Student Workers and Resident Assistants

Ergonomics

 

To better serve UT Tyler employees and faculty, EHS personnel are available to perform ergonomic evaluations and make recommendations to minimize and prevent workplace cumulative trauma injuries. These services are available by calling 7011 to schedule an ergonomic evaluation.
