Curved Penis May Increase Cancer Risk
What is Peyronie’s Disease?




Peyronie's diseaseis an acquired inflammatory illness of the penis.
The principal manifestation is the formationof a plaque (a flatscar tissue) within thepenis.
One can feel this plaque through the penile skin.
This plaqueis not a tumor but canlead to serious problems likecurved penis and/or
painfulerections.
Symptoms of Peyronie’s disease
The symptoms of this disease may appear suddenly or develop gradually. The common symptoms are:






Growth of a scar tissue
A substantial bend of the penis.
Erection problems such as ED
Shortening of penis
Severe pain during sexual intercourse
Premature ejaculation
The exact cause of Peyronie’s disease is unknown; however, it is believed that trauma or injury or
some genetic factors or a combination of both genes and injury can be involved.

Peyronie's, genes, and cancer




PDusually runs in families
The genetics in Peyronie’s has received much attention.
Some of the genes related to Peyronie's disease are involved in many human cancers.
Example, WNT2, a protein-coding gene, has been associated with Peyronie's and also in the
progression of various cancers.
Increased cancer risk




In a study, 48,423 men with Peyronie's, 1,177,428 with erectile dysfunction, and 484,230 controls,
with an average age of 49.8 years were compared.
Observation was done for an average of 4 years.
Individuals with Peyronie's had a 10% increased risk of all cancersvs. men with ED.
In patients with PD, a 43 percent greater risk of stomach cancer was noted with 39 percent
increased risk of testicular cancer and 19 percent increased risk of melanoma.
Conclusion
Men with PD have an augmented risk of cancer development, indicating a probable common causative
factors between PD and cancer development, supporting recent genetic findings.
