KAAN ARCHITECTEN
The jury decision was unanimous
for the winning design submitted by
KAAN Architecten of Rotterdam after
a tendering process. Their ambitious
design, inspired by the layout and
dimensions of the palace, logically
incorporates all of the required facilities
and spaces while expressing a grandeur
appropriate for a leading museum.
MUSEUM PALEIS HET LOO IN 2021
RENEWED
Renovated
Museum Paleis Het Loo is one of the most popular museums in
the Netherlands. Changing needs, new aspirations and necessary
maintenance make that the time has come for renovations, renewal
and improvements!

Imagine visiting museum Paleis Het Loo in
2021... You might stroll the promenade from
the stables towards the palace, through the
impressive lane of trees you catch a glimpse
of Het Loo. Upon reaching the courtyard, the
Bassecour, you pass through the Entrance
Pavilions and proceed to the new underground
Entrance Area. Then, from the Grand Foyer you
see the palace from a very different perspective
through the glass ceiling. Will you move
directly on to the palace with its newly mapped
out route? Or will you head for the House of
Orange? Do the kids want to go to the Junior
Palace right away? Perhaps the temporary
exhibition or a cup of coffee will draw you in
first…
We look forward to welcoming you in 2021
to our renewed museum Paleis Het Loo!

The four grass parterres of the front
courtyard are replaced by a glass-topped
underground space. A thin layer of water
will flow over the glass – a nod to the
fountains and waterworks of the historic
gardens. The combination of water and
glass will create unique lighting for the
Entrance Area and Grand Foyer.

West of the Grand Foyer is a space for
temporary exhibitions consisting of two
large and two medium-sized square rooms
connected to each other. With 5-metre high
ceilings, it is an impressive space for displays
and presentations.

Visitors can walk from the courtyard to the
Entrance Pavilions where the spacious stairwell
and lifts are situated. They arrive in the lightfilled underground Entrance Area where
tickets, the information centre, Museum Shop,
cloakroom and other visitor facilities are found.
grand foyeR
The Grand Foyer is the beating heart of the
underground expansion – the spot where all
visitors congregate and go their separate ways
into the museum complex, and where they
naturally return to at the end. The Grand Foyer
connects the Entrance Area to the palace and
provide access to the temporary exhibition
area and the House of Orange. The lively
and regal hall can be seen from the outside
courtyard through the water and glass and
provides an excellent, large events facility
for up to 700 guests.

In the West Wing a museum will be developed
especially for children: the Junior Palace. This
museum offers activities for children aged 2 to 12:
playing for younger children and hands-on activities
for older children.

The present king does not call himself William
IV. But, of course, he is preceded by Williams I,
II and III. Who were they? Why is a Dutch king
invested and not crowned? These questions
will be addressed in the House of Orange
in the East Wing. In an accessible, tangible
and interactive way, the past and present is
intriguingly entwined. This space sheds light on
the history of the stadtholders and kings and
queens of the House of Orange-Nassau by way
of spectacular items and theatrical stories.

The interior layout of the forty royal
rooms will be improved and have a more
logical arrangement. Just like the royal
inhabitants once did, visitors will enter the
palace on the Grand Staircase and follow
the Stadtholder’s route through the east
section and the King’s route through the
west section. Some of the rooms will be
furnished as servants’ quarters to convey
that real ‘upstairs-downstairs’ feel.
The Information Centre in the
underground space explains the story of
the palace building and occupancy, as
well as the gardens, over the centuries.

RENEWED & RENOVATED
The renewed, renovated and improved palace
is finished in 2021. Visitors are treated to a
warm reception in a regal setting. The House
of Orange and the Junior Palace present
engaging visuals and information, the palace
rooms will have been completely renovated
and the temporary exhibition space has its first
presentation. The gardens, stables and palace
will once again be a unified and compelling
whole. Museum Paleis Het Loo is ready for the
future.
‘OPEN, JUST NOT AS USUAL’
During the 2018-2020 renovation and
expansion works, Paleis Het Loo will be ‘Open,
just not as usual’. The main building is closed
to the public, but the gardens, stables and
restaurants are open from April to September
and over the Christmas holidays. There
is a special programme of events during
these months. Visitors will be able to see
the construction underway from the palace
roof. Grand Foyer
