Dr. David Nestel was born and raised in Mexico. He studied his Bachelor
degree in Biology and Master Degree in Zoology at the Hebrew University of
Jerusalem, Israel, and his Ph.D. in Entomology at the University of California
Berkeley, USA. His early professional activity as a scientist took place in the
National Institute of Ecology in Xalapa, Mexico, working on the agroecology of
coffee producing systems and on insect ecology. He then moved to Israel, were
he has been working as Scientist since 1991 in the Agricultural Research
Organization of the Ministry of Agriculture. His main areas of activity during
last 20 years includes the nutritional physiology of fruit flies, especially as
related to the sterile insect technique and mass rearing, and the ecology of fruit
flies of economic importance. His work in insect ecology has concentrated on
the population ecology and dispersion patterns of fruit flies. During the last 15
years he has studied the population ecology of the olive fly, and has
investigated the application of methods of control against this pest in Israel. He
has published more than 90 scientific papers, and he is a founder of the
international organization TEAM.
