Ιωνία Βόλου Dr. David Nestel was born and raised in Mexico. He studied his Bachelor degree in Biology and Master Degree in Zoology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel, and his Ph.D. in Entomology at the University of California Berkeley, USA. His early professional activity as a scientist took place in the National Institute of Ecology in Xalapa, Mexico, working on the agroecology of coffee producing systems and on insect ecology. He then moved to Israel, were he has been working as Scientist since 1991 in the Agricultural Research Organization of the Ministry of Agriculture. His main areas of activity during last 20 years includes the nutritional physiology of fruit flies, especially as related to the sterile insect technique and mass rearing, and the ecology of fruit flies of economic importance. His work in insect ecology has concentrated on the population ecology and dispersion patterns of fruit flies. During the last 15 years he has studied the population ecology of the olive fly, and has investigated the application of methods of control against this pest in Israel.
