Foreseen objectives and results of the research programme performed by the research fellow “assegnista di ricerca”:
3.1 Testo in italiano:
nazionale (van Zanten 2001; Lagrange, Oberti 2006; Butler, Hamnett 2007; Borlini, Memo, 2009; Favaro 2014; Luatti
2014), è necessario studiare in maniera approfondita in quanto possono prefigurare rischi legati all’emergere di
Ricerche
qualitative (Santerini 2010, Bolognesi 2014) e quantitative (Catarci 2013) condotte in scuole dell’infanzia e scuole
tipo inclusivo in scuole socialmente e culturalmente eterogenee (Dyson 1997, Gonzalez, Moll & Amanti 2005, Comber

2014, Howard & Richard Milner IV 2014, Tarozzi 2014, Fiorucci 2015).
2. Obiettivi, aspetti metodologici e risultati attesi
pedagogici, inclusione e literacies in tali contesti.
I risultati

3.2 Text in English:
1. Background of the study
The MIUR-ISMU National Report Students with non-Italian citizenship for 2014/2015 reports a percentage increase of
the schools with a high presence (greater or equal to 30%) of students with non-Italian citizenship from 1% (in
2006/2007) to 5,1% (in 2014/2015) of the total number of Italian schools (MIUR- ISMU 2016, p. 68). These data seem
to suggest trends towards concentration that, as suggested by international and national research (van Zanten 2001;
Lagrange, Oberti 2006; Butler, Hamnett 2007, Borlini, Memo 2009, Favaro 2014, Luatti 2014), need to be studied in a
greater depth, because of the risk that these trends could be a sign of the emergence of areas of social and
educational exclusion, which would undermine the overall process of inclusion of migrant and postmigrant
components of the Italian population. One of the issues that likely deserves more specific research attention, is the
fact that in 2014/2015, according the already mentioned Miur-Ismu Report, 52,2% of Italian schools with a greater or
equal to 30% presence of students with non-Italian citizenship were pre-primary schools, and 29,9% were primary
schools (Miur-Ismu, 2016: 69). Both qualitative (Santerini 2010, Bolognesi 2014) and quantitative (Catarci 2013)
research carried out on Italian pre-primary and primary schools with a high presence of students with a migrant
background, show both emerging risks of exclusion and the efforts these schools accomplish in order to promote both
diversity and inclusion, together with specific attention for the quality of the educational and learning experience for all
the students.
Within this general framework, there is the growing awareness among academics that more research is required to
explore and document the role played by teachers in promoting inclusive environments and practices in socially and
culturally heterogeneous schools (Dyson 1997, Gonzalez, Moll & Amanti 2005, Comber 2007, Cottini et al. 2016), and
to explore teachers’ pre- and in-service training needs in these contexts (Hogg 2011, Da Silva Iddings, Combs & Moll
2014, Howard & Richard Milner IV 2014, Tarozzi 2014, Fiorucci 2015).
2. Objectives, methodological aspects, expected outcomes
This research moves in this direction, focusing on pre-primary and primary schools with a high presence of students
with non-Italian citizenship in Friuli Venezia Giulia, and aims to achieve the following objectives: 1) explore and
analyse pedagogical frameworks emerging among teachers working in socially and culturally

heterogeneous pre-primary and primary schools; 2) map educational practices activated in these schools, also with a
special reference to innovative practices and environments and to projects or actions bridging preprimary and primary
schools and connecting formal and informal forms of learning (also related to cooperation between school and families
and between school and out-of-the-school learning environments, such as libraries, communities etc.); 3) map
emerging training needs of teachers working in socially and culturally heterogeneous pre-primary and primary schools.
In order to achieve such objectives, this research will adopt a qualitative approach. The research will begin by
reviewing the international and national research literature on socially and culturally heterogeneous preprimary and
primary schools, with a special reference to research exploring issues of pedagogy, inclusion and literacies in such
contexts. Semi-structured interviews will be carry out with key informants at the local level and with the principals of
Istituti Comprensivi which include pre-primary and/or primary schools with a high presence of students with non-Italian
citizenship in Friuli Venezia Giulia, and documentation (POF, communications, projects etc.) from the same schools
will be analysed. On the basis of the literature review and of the results from the interviews with principals and key
informants, an open-ended qualitative questionnaire will be constructed, addressing issues related to teachers’
pedagogical approaches, innovative and/or ICT-based practices and environments, inclusive literacies, and teachers’
training needs. The questionnaire will be administrated to teachers working in pre-primary and primary schools with a
high presence of students with non-Italian citizenship. The results of the questionnaire will be studied in greater detail
through focus groups and/or individual semistructured interviews with teachers from the schools involved in the
research. The overall results of the research will be returned to the schools, during a final seminar to which all the
involved schools will be invited.
The expected outcomes are the following: 1) a framework analysing the main pedagogical assumptions, emerging
among teachers working in socially and culturally heterogeneous preprimary and primary schools in Friuli Venezia
Giulia; 2) a map of educational practices activated in these schools (also with the view to evaluate the possibility to
develop further researches/case studies); 3) a map of training needs expressed by teachers (also with the view to
evaluate the possibility of developing further participatory action researches).

PROBLEMATICA GENERALE
contenute nelle opere dell’orsolina e nelle sue biografie.

GENERAL ISSUE
In the context of the spiritual direction, as a regulated institution, contemporary historiography has granted an
increasingly role to gender related issues, i.e. the dynamics regarding male / female relationships, the roles in the
practice of spiritual direction and the examination of real couples’ experiences.
Since conscience direction implies a relationship of power in which the superiority of man over woman is
lexicalized in terms of “direction” or with the imposition “on commission”, the action of direction is unfruitful without
a full trust relationship, which allows the confessor to activate the psychic mechanisms triggering the confession
and evoking the interior spiritual path of the directed one. In this relationship, the success of the confessor is
straight linked to the success of the directed one, in a sort of “double bind”: the sanctity of the woman is attested

by the ability of her confessor; the success of the woman allows to the spiritual director or the hagiographer to
acquire an important symbolic capital.
From the Middle Ages the female religious writing, witness of their holiness, could not be exercised in absence of a
male commission and his endorsement. These texts, inserted in a hagiographic account, were examples to follow
for other Christians and laid the path for sanctification (Bilinkoff, Coakley, Donhoue, Ranft. Storia della direzione).
These writings, as a raw material, were furtherly developed and diffused by different mediators, men of the church.
Because of the exceptional nature of the personality of Marie de l'Incarnation, Ursuline of Tours, the first
missionary in New France in 1639, as well as a recognized mystical, she was invited by her spiritual directors to
report her life and to testify herself.
THEMATICAL RESEARCH
Our aim is to focus on the relationship between the spiritual directors and the directed one and especially, we plan
to replenish through historical writings and private documents the network of relationships that allowed a middleclass and a provincial woman to become accredited as the founder of the Catholic Church in Nouvelle-France.
The historical period considered coincides with the French phase of Marie Guyard’s vocation: from 1621, when the
Feuillant Raymond de Saint-Bernard took the soul direction of Marie de l'Incarnation till 1639, date of her departure
to the Nouvelle-France.
The starting assumption of our research is that the choice fell upon Marie de l'Incarnation as a consequence of her
spiritual director shift: at the convent of Tours the Feuillant Raymond de Saint Bernard was succeeded by the
Jesuit Joseph de la Haye, who commissioned the first spiritual report in 1633.
This first Relation allowed the novice to become accredited as a personality of choice; yet diffused among the
devotees as a manuscript, the report was worth for appoint her as leader of the small unit of nuns embarked at
Dieppe in 1639 and directed to Nouvelle-France, where evangelization was in the hands of the Jesuits.
METHODOLOGY
This project has a multidisciplinary approach. It is located in the intersections among literature, theology, history
and history of ideas.
A first phase of research will consist in tracing the correspondence among Marie de l'Incarnation and her two
directors of conscience, Raymond de Saint Bernard and Joseph de la Haye, along with other documents and
testimonies contained in the Ursuline works and in her biographies. It is necessary to consult the texts preserved
in the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, in the library and archives of the Château de Chantilly and in the
Bibliothèque Mazarine.
The second phase will be committed to the analysis of the texts, aiming at highlighting the discursive strategies
and the rhetorical devices employed.
Also thanks to the identification and reading of historical and religious works, the third phase of the research will
reconstruct the personality of the spiritual directors of Marie de l'Incarnation in the context of the disputes between
the Feuillants and the Jesuits during the sixteenth century.
AIMS
Through the examination of this private documentary material, we aim to reconstruct the experiences of spiritual
direction which involved Marie de l'Incarnation during her French period, and to explore the relationship that the
disciple had with her teachers, in particular with the Feuillant Raymond de Saint Bernard and the Jesuit Joseph de
la Haye; the analysis of her spiritual relationship (1633) makes also to stand out the degree of internalization of
models and behavior of the Ursuline. The analysis of the 1633 report will highlight the strategies adopted by the
Ursuline to present the validity of her inner path.
RESULTS
The research will rebuild on a gender perspective the complex network of connections in which Marie de
l'Incarnation realized her missionary activity.

Testo in italiano (min 3000 caratteri/ characters):
con il piano esperto rappresentato dai professionisti e infine con il piano dei decisori politici e degli attori;

The activity of the research grant holder will be developed within the research multi-year programme on the topics
of landscape planning and management which is taking piace at the University of Udine.
The landscape, conceived as the perceptive reflection of the territorial organizational dynamics, is a key topic in
the research activity developed by the geographers of the Department in collaboration with other university
departments. Such activity has been greatly intensified in the current year because of the collaboration with the
Friuli Venezia Giulia Region for the elaboration of the Regional Landscape Pian. Within the several subjects which
have been dealt with in such context, one of the most relevant and deserving a more detailed study is the
identification of the most suitable and effective modalities for collecting the essential contribution of the citizens
about the landscape values and governance. Another relevant aspect concerns the identification of the actors and
their role in the t"erritorial governance. Both study approaches must consider the coherence principle and a
constant monitoring of the activities, aiming at the establishment of a Landscape Observatory based on a
multidisciplinary collaboration among geography, plannig, anthropology and social sciences which is needed when
dealing with such a multidimensional subject as the landscape.
In fact, the landscape can be regarded to as an indicator of coherence of the territorial policies.
It can be asked how to identify the coherence factor and which role to ascribe to it in the frame of the European
Landscape Convention (2000), that underlines the importance of the individuai and collective perception in the
interpretation of the elements and consequently the values which are attributed to the landscape by the populaton
and the governance actors.
Within such context, the objectives of this research programme can be formulateci as follows.
Identify and process the most appropriate modalities and tools aimed at collecting the perceptions, both individuai
and collective, of citizens about landscape; connect the perceptive value-based level of the population with the
technical level of the experts and the politica! leve! of the decision-makers and actors; identify which kind of
politica! and planning synthesis can be expected; conceive the most effective educational activities aimed at
spreading landscape awareness among the population and especially the young generations; conceive, pian,
realize and text web tools for the involvement of actors and citizens, also in the perspective of a Landscape
Observatory. With regard to the last specific aspect, one key aim of this research programme is to set up
innovative tools that allow people to express their opinions about landscape and to constantly monitor the planning
and policy actions about landscape and the activity of the different actors.

Background
The study of how bilingual speakers manage to switch to one of their languages, while preventing massive
interference from their other language, has prompted a great interest in the last decades. However, the study of
the neural correlates of language switching and how it overlaps with a general ability to switch between different
tasks is relatively recent. In a seminal PET investigation, Price et al. (1999) asked a group of adult GermanEnglish bilinguals to read or translate words presented in German (L1), English (L2) or alternating L1 and L2
(switching condition). Switching resulted in increased activity in the dorsal aspect of the left posterior inferior frontal
cortex and bilateral supramarginal gyri. Similarly, in a language switching condition relative to a single language
condition during a picture naming task Hernandez et al (2000; 2001) and Hernandez (2009) found activation of the
left Dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex. These preliminary findings have been replicated in several studies (Abutalebi,
Brambati et al., 2007; Abutalebi et al., 2008; Crinion et al., 2006; Venkatraman et al., 2006; Wang et al., 2007) and
suggest the involvement of an attentional network in language switching. For example, Abutalebi et al. (2008)
tested a group of German (L1) – English (L2) bilinguals who had learned their L2 in late childhood. They were
engaged in an overt picture naming task in three conditions: 1. Single naming condition (SNc): naming in one
language; 2. Task switching condition (TSc): they were asked either to produce the name of a target item or to
produce an associated verb (verb generation); 3. Language switching condition (SWc): participants were asked to
name object in L1 or L2. Overall, naming objects in L2 differed from naming objects in L1 with increased neural
activity in the left inferior frontal lobe (from the inferior portions of BA47 up to the superior portions of BA44). Taken
together, the two switching conditions showed increased activity in the left superior (BA44 and BA6) and inferior
(close to BA47) portion of the left inferior frontal gyrus, bilateral precentral gyrus and right middle and superior
temporal lobe. Finally, relative to the SNc, the SWc yelded increased activity in both superior and inferior portions
of the IFG. Overall, these findings suggest that switching between languages involves an effortful retrieval process
with activity extending to the DLPFC (which suggests that switching relies on more executive processes).
There is contrasting evidence on the domain specificity of language switching as compared to the general ability to
switch between tasks and select an appropriate response pattern. For example, Calabria et al. (2012; 2015) tested
bilinguals of different ages in both linguistic and non-linguistic switching tasks. In the linguistic task, participants
were required to name some pictures in Catalan and some other pictures in Spanish according to a cue (i.e., either
a Catalan or Spanish flag). In the non-linguistic task, instead, participants were required to classify pictures
according to a non- linguistic classification rule (i.e., classify pictures by their color and by their shape). The cost of
switching between languages or tasks was calculated by subtracting reaction times (RTs) of “repeat” trials (AA
task sequences) from those of “switch trials” (BA task sequences). Results other studies have found evidence of
an influence of language switching proficiency and executive functions, showing a correlation between intrusion
errors in linguistic tasks and inhibition errors in non-linguistic tasks (e.g., Festman et al., 2010). The overlap
between language switching and task switching might be related to the type of selection processes required by the
task and to the similarity between the anatomo-functional organization of language and other tasks. Indeed,
different types of tasks may require different selection and control processes.
Hypotheses, predictions and aims of the current project
Many researchers have recently emphasized the strong link, at both neurofunctional and evolutionary levels,
between language and action selection structures (Arbib et al., 2014). Thus, we predicted that the overlap of

language control with action control systems might be higher than that with other forms of task control. To this aim
we capitalized on previous studies conducted in the Cognitive Neuroscience Lab aimed at investigating how the
brain deals with multiple sources of information in understanding others’ behavior (Amoruso & Urgesi, 2016;
Amoruso et al., 2016). In particular, in these studies we found that during an action prediction task, the observation
of movement kinematics occurring in congruent contexts (i.e., reaching-to-grasp a cup full of coffee with a
precision grip) facilitated the motor cortex at early stages (~240ms after action onset), while the observation of
kinematics in incongruent contexts (i.e., reaching-to-grasp a cup empty with a precision grip) led to a later
inhibition of the motor facilitation responses (~400ms after action onset). The different timing of facilitatory and
inhibitory processes suggested the intervention of a control mechanism called into the attempt to solve the conflict
between two discrepant sources of information. In fact, by using transcranial magnetic stimulation to inhibit neural
areas involved in conflict monitoring (i.e., the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex), we have recently found that the later
inhibition for conflicting action-context stimuli disappeared (Amoruso et al., in preparation).
Capitalizing on these results, here we plan to perform two studies (one behavioural and one functional) in order to
investigate the relation between mechanisms underlining cognitive control in language selection and action
selection as a function of linguistic proficiency and to investigate if the inhibition of areas involved in language
control interferes also with the ability to select among two conflicting action representations. Furthermore, we will
also test whether the ability to deal with kinematics- and context-based action representations correlates with
language control in bilinguals. This will provide a new paradigm to investigate the neurofunctional organization of
language control and its relation with general executive control functions.
Materials and methods
Study 1
Participants
Recruitment procedure (for the behavioural study)
For the behavioural study we will recruit students with Italian as native language. They will have at least scholastic
knowledge of English.
Experimental design
The experimental procedure will comprise two tasks: a linguistic picture naming task and a non- verbal action
recognition task. Each task will include three experimental blocks, which will follow a training session. For each
task, participants will perform firstly two single task blocks and a mixed
switching block. The single tasks will consist of i) a block requiring to name pictures in Italian (L1) and of ii) a block
requiring the use of English (L2); or of iii) an action-kinematic recognition block (A1), and of iv) an action-context
recognition block (A2) for the non-verbal action recognition task. Conversely, in the mixed switching block, task
instructions will switch pseudorandomly between L1 and L2 for the linguistic picture naming task and between A1
and A2 for the non-verbal action recognition task. The order between the action recognition and the picture naming
task and between the two single tasks will be randomized between participants, while the switching block will be
always performed as a third block within each experimental procedure.
Two separate training sessions will always precede the two tasks, thus allowing participants to familiarize with the
experimental stimuli and with the task instructions. Importantly, since each training session will stop only after
achieving the 75% of accuracy, the training will allow us to expect comparable baseline performance in the two
non-verbal and linguistic tasks.
Picture naming task
Single tasks
For each trial, participants will be presented with 10 possible pictures surrounded by 4 possible words
corresponding to the Italian target name of the picture, the corresponding target English name, an Italian distracter
name and the corresponding English distracter name (see Figure 1 for an example). Participants will be required
to select the matching name of the picture by using Italian (L1) or English (L2) depending on the block instruction.
Target names of the pictures in L1 and L2 are listed in Table 1. All pictures represent common objects and have
been selected so to have similar frequency rates in both languages. They were also controlled for length in each
language. Four pairs of words are cognates in both Italian and English (fuoco – fire; bici – bike; tavolo – table; fiore
– flower).
The matching target Italian word and the corresponding target English name will be always presented one on the
left and one on the right part of the screen, and one in the upper and one in the lower section of the screen. The
presence of an Italian and an English distractor will force participants to process and select the meaning of the
matching name of a picture, and not just an Italian or an English name. Participants will be required to answer by
pressing one of two keyboard buttons, i.e., z in case a target word is presented on the left side of the screen or m

During the single task blocks, pictures will be always presented within an orange or light blue colored frame, which
will be irrelevant for the task.

In the mixed switching block, experimental stimuli will be the same as in the single task blocks. Importantly, in this
block participants will be asked to switch between one task instruction to another and thus to name the picture by
using either Italian or English. The color of the frame surrounding the picture (either orange or light blue) and a
vocal cue (a voice saying “Italiano” or “Inglese”) will signal to participants the language to use to select the target
name in the current trial. In order to increase the switching cost (i.e., the difference in reaction time and accuracy
between the switching and the repeated trials) we will use a smaller proportion of switching vs. repeated trials
(30% vs 70%) and the sequences will be pseudorandomized in order to avoid the presence of consecutive
switching trials. Moreover, half of the switching trials will
require participants to switch from L1 to L2, and
half of them will require switching from L2 to L1. A total sample of 80 trials will be used in this switching block.

Importantly, the single task and the switching blocks will always follow a preliminary training, during which the

will be provided with a feedback about their accuracy and reaction time and they will be required to reach at least
75% of accuracy level in order to pass to the next training block and then to start the experimental blocks.

Non-verbal action recognition task
Single task
For each trial, participants will be presented with 10 possible pictures depicting the hand of an actor performing
some everyday actions embedded in an unusual context. Importantly, within the same picture, two sources of
information will suggest two different actions. For example, on the one hand, kinematic information (i.e., the
posture of the hand performing a precision grip movement) may suggest that an actor is grasping a mug to drink a
coffee while, on the other hand, the contextual information presented in the same picture (i.e., the presence of
an empty mug on the
table) may suggest that the actor is grasping the mug in order to place it away. In these single task
blocks, participants will be asked to select the verbal descriptor of the current action, presented on the left or on
the right side of the picture. While in the action-kinematic recognition block (A1) participants will be asked to
indicate the action that is suggested by the kinematics, in the action- context recognition block (A2) they will be
required to focus on the contextual information in order to recognize the action.
Target actions suggested by the kinematics or by context are listed in Table 2. All pictures will be extracted by
some video-clips already used in previous studies about action comprehension in context (Amoruso & Urgesi,
2016; Amoruso et al., 2016).
Participants will be required to answer by pressing two possible keyboard buttons, i.e., z in case a target descriptor
is presented on the left side of the screen or m if a target descriptor is presented on the right side. Maximum time
given for a response will be limited to 3000ms. During these single task blocks, pictures will be always presented
within an orange or light blue colored frame, which will be irrelevant for the task.

Switching block
In this mixed switching block, experimental stimuli will be the same as in the single task blocks. Importantly, in this
block, participants will be asked to switch between one task instruction to another and thus to recognize the
presented action by using the kinematic or the contextual information. The color of the frame surrounding the

participants on which source of information they will have to focus to recognize the action in the current trial. The
same proportion of switching vs. repeated trials, the same number of trials and the same constraints in the trials
sequences that have been above described for the Language switching task will be adopted. Importantly, also in
this case the single task and the switching blocks will always follow the
preliminary training, with the same stimuli and instructions. Thus, participants will be provided with a feedback
about their accuracy and reaction time and they will be required to reach at least 75% of accuracy level to pass to
the next training block and thus to start the experimental blocks.
At the end of the whole procedure, a questionnaire assessing some personality traits and measuring the autistic
quotient will be administered to participants. The whole experiment will last approximately 70 minutes for each
participant.
Study 2
Participants
Recruitment procedure (for the TMS study)
For the TMS study we will recruit as participants Italian-English bilingual students that also meet inclusion criteria
for TMS protocols.
Experimental design
The same tasks of Study 1 will be repeated under the same procedure after interfering with the activity of the i) left
DLPFC; ii) left MTG; iii) vertex as control site by means of continuous theta burst stimulation (cTBS). Importantly,
the effect of such a stimulation on the functions of the underlying tissues are known to outlast for at least 20
minutes (Huang, 2005). Thus, since the entire experimental blocks will be performed within 15 minutes after the
end of the cTBS, we will measure participants’ ability to perform the task while the activity of the left DLPFC or the
left MTG or the control site is altered. Stimulation sites for cTBS will be identified on each participant’s scalp with
the Softaxic Navigator system (EMS, Bologna, Italy). Skull landmarks
(nasion, inion, the two periaricular points) and ~ 65 landmarks providing a uniform representation
of the scalp will be digitized by means of a Polaris VicraOptimal Tracking System (NDI, Canada). Based on these
coordinates and by using a magnetic resonance imaging MRI-constructed stereotaxic template, coordinates in
Talaraich space (Talairach and Tournoux, 1988) will be automatically estimated. Talaraich Coordinates of the
target regions will be estimated in line with previous studies stimulating the same areas in similar task. Continuous
theta burst stimulation will be delivered by means of a 70-mm figure of-eight stimulation coil (Magstim Double 70
mm Air- Cooled) connected to a Magstim Super Rapid2 (The Magstim Company, Carmarthenshire, Wales),
producing a magnetic field up to 0.93 T at the coil surface. Three pulses burst at 50 Hz repeated every 200 ms (at

a burst frequency of 5 Hz) for 20 second will be delivered at 40% stimulator output (300 pulses). During the
stimulation, the coil will be held in a fixed position by a mechanical arm over the scalp position corresponding to
the target area. The coil will be held tangentially to the scalp site corresponding to the target area. Each participant
will repeat the whole experimental procedure after each stimulation. The order of stimulation site will be Latinsquared balanced across participants. Importantly, there will be 1 h interval between each cTBS session to
minimize carry- over effect of the prior TBS session (Cho et al., 2010).
