POMPEI
Nascosta tra le vestigia medievali vive ancora oggi l’Asisium romana.
Nell’epoca dell’antica Roma, infatti, Asisium era un importante
riferimento per il territorio, era abitata da ricchi mercanti che
possedevano ville lussuose ed era rinomata come città termale.
Le domus romane, scoperte e restaurate di questi ultimi decenni, hanno
solo completato un quadro composto da importanti reperti in ottimo
stato di conservazione: due fori, l’anfiteatro, il circo, il teatro, il
torrione funerario della “gens Petronas”, alcune cisterne monumentali
per l’acqua: tutto questo è arrivato intatto fino a noi perché la città
medievale fu costruita sopra o intorno ai resti di quella romana!
Tempio di Minerva
Esempio delle meraviglie nascoste nell’Assisi sotterranea sono due case
patrizie rinvenute recentemente: la Domus di Properzio (I sec. d.C.) e la
Domus del Lararium.
La prima è collocata sotto l’abside della chiesa di Santa Maria
Maggiore, di fronte al luogo dove San Francesco rinunciò ai beni
paterni. Di questa domus gentilizia sono ancora visibili alcuni vani
affrescati con pavimento in marmo a mosaico, un portico coperto con
decorazioni di stile pompeiano, composte da tralci e piccoli fiori sui
quali poggiano uccellini colorati.
Domus di Properzio
La Domus del Larario, sempre di epoca imperiale, è collocata sotto
alcuni edifici storici di Assisi (la sede del Tribunale di Palazzo
Giampé, un edificio usato per festa del Calendimaggio e il Palazzo del
Cardinale) ed ha dimensioni importanti (500 metri quadrati abitabili).
E’ l’ultima in ordine di tempo ad essere stata scoperta e restaurata. Al
suo interno presenta la tipica struttura della domus romana, con un
giardino porticato (peristilio) su cui ruotano gli altri ambienti
domestici.
Posta sette metri sotto il livello stradale, la domus possiede splendidi
mosaici e affreschi dall’eccezionale stato di conservazione, come se ne
possono ammirare solo a Roma e Pompei.
L’immagine nuziale trovata nella stanza da letto (cubiculum) della
padrona, e il raffinato pavimento a mosaico sono un esempio
dell’enorme rilevanza archeologica del ritrovamento.
Domus Lararium
Il centro della vita sociale, economica ed amministrativa di Assisi era
il Foro Romano, ancora visibile sotto l’attuale Piazza del Comune.
Il luogo era dominato, allora come oggi, dall’imponente Tempio di
Minerva, attuale chiesa di Santa Maria sopra Minerva.
Vi erano collocati il tribunale monumentale, con il podio ed i seggi per
i magistrati, il tempietto tetrastilo dedicato ai Dioscuri, la cisterna e le
tabernae.
Entrando da un piccolo ingresso di via Portica, si scende sotto la
piazza medievale, tornando ad ammirare la ricca e
raffinata città romana; è un’esperienza dal forte impatto visivo ed
emozionale.
Foro Romano
Tantissimi sono i resti romani dislocati ad Assisi, ma una visita è
d’obbligo nella Cattedrale di San Rufino, sotto il parcheggio multipiano di piazza Matteotti e in via dell’Anfiteatro, intorno alla quale
un intero quartiere medievale è nato sui resti dell’Anfiteatro Romano.

The Properzio’s home
The Domus of Lararium, always of the imperial era, is located under
some historic buildings of Assisi (the seat of the Palazzo Giampé
Court, a building used for celebration of May Day and the
Cardinal's Palazzo) and has significant size (500 square meters of
living space) .

(peristyle) on which revolve other domestic environments.

Domus Lararium
The center of social, economic and administrative of Assisi was the
Roman Forum, still visible under the current Piazza del Comune. The
place was dominated, then as now, the imposing Temple of Minerva,
the present church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva.
There were located the monumental court, with the podium and seats
for the judiciary, the tetrastyle temple dedicated to the Dioscuri, the
cistern and tabernae.
Walking past a small entrance via Portica, it falls below the medieval
square, back to admire the rich and refined Roman city; is an
experience with a strong visual and emotional.
Roman forum
Many are the Roman ruins located in Assisi, but a visit is a must in
the Cathedral of San Rufino, under the multi-storey car park in
Piazza Matteotti and Via Amphitheatre, around which an entire
medieval quarter was born on the ruins of Roman Amphitheatre.
The Roman Forum is an entrance fee (tel. 075-8155077) and the Roman Domus are visited by
reservation, the rest is available free of charge.
