SPEAR3 Beam Line Upgrades
• Objective:
– Upgrade beam line optics, etc to facilitate
optimal exploitation of the SPEAR3 source
characteristics.
• Schedule:
– all front ends 500mA capable on SPEAR3
startup (Fall, 2003)
– all ID beam lines 500mA capable in 2004
(resources permitting)
– all bend beam lines 500mA capable with
filtering and/or aperturing by 2004 (resources
permitting)
• Funding:
– DOE BES, DOE BER, NIH NCRR, PRT, ...

SPEAR3 - Beam Line Upgrades
Program Elements
• evaluate and optimize beam line functionality in the
context of the present/future user community needs
• mask, filter, window, and optic upgrades as required
to cope with the power increase
• focusing optic upgrades to
faithfully image the source
• position monitor,
optic, and support
structure improvements
to preserve SPEAR3
stability
SP2
• shielding modifications
to ensure SSRL continues
to operate safely
• new insertion devices for
BL4/7 to fully utilize the
SPEAR3 source
characteristics and provide
new capabilities
SP3
BL4-2 focus w/ 2mr accept.

SPEAR3 Beam Line Upgrades
•
Most beam lines will experience optics improvements but
relatively modest conceptual changes.
•
There are, of course, exceptions to this rule. A few of the
more notable exceptions proposed are:
– BL5-2/3 where the locust monochromator will be
replaced and the beam line optimized for 2501200+eV operations (currently 10-1200eV);
– BL7-2 where the conventional toroidal mirror
focusing system will be replaced with a cylindrical
mirror and sagittal focusing monochromator for
improved high energy performance;
– BL4-3 & BL7-3 which will obtain collimating
mirror optics;
– BL6-2 where the optics will be transformed to a
double mirror system similar to 9-2, 9-3, and 11-2
and optimized for >5000eV operations;
– BL3-3 where the beam line will be optimized for
1750-5000eV operations;
– BL8-2 will be optimized for 250-1900eV operations
with the inclusion of a grating multilayer and
reconfigured mirror optics;
– BL4/7 which will benefit from new 20 pole, 2.1T
wigglers.

SP3 BL Upgrade Schedule
resource constrained schedule:
• all front ends 500mA capable on SPEAR3 startup
(Fall, 2003)
• all ID beam lines 500mA capable in 2004
(resources permitting)
• all bend beam lines 500mA capable though perhaps
not operating ideally by 2004 (resources permitting)
