Definition of Scientific Method
A Systematic way
of solving problems.
There are six steps
in the Scientific
Method/Process.
Step 1.
Problem
Formulate a specific
question to investigate.
Testable Questions
1. How does the height of a ramp affect the speed of a marble as it rolls
down the ramp?
2. What type of exercise increases heart rate the most?
3. Will placing an egg in vinegar affect its mass?
4. Which paper towel brand is the strongest?
5. What is the effect of salt on the boiling temperature of water?
6. Given the same amount of water, how does pot size affect the amount
of time it takes to boil?
7. Which type of cup will keep a hot drink warm longer: paper, plastic,
Styrofoam, or glass?
8. How does size of antacid tablet affect dissolving time?
9. How does increasing the height of a ramp affect how far a ball rolls
down the ramp?
Step 2.
Research
Gather information about the problem.
•Use your 5 Senses to observe the
problem.
•State what is already known.
•Use books, scientific magazines,
internet, etc. …RESEARCH !!
•Talk to an expert.
Step 3
Hypothesis
An educated PREDICTION
(guess) based on observations and
research.
•Use an If… then statement.
•Hypothesis must be testable.
Step 4
Procedure
Test the Hypothesis.
•Create a detailed procedure, in list
format.
•Data should be measurable.
•Your experiment should have two parts:
Variable - what you’re testing
Control - lacks the variable
Step 5
Data
•Observe and record your data.
•Test at least 3 times!
•Organize data. (table, chart, graph)
Step 6
Conclusion
•Restate the basics of your experiment.
•Agree or disagree with the hypothesis.
•Use evidence from your collected data to
support your conclusion statement.
