Answer the following question in your journal.
On page 118, Ponyboy says, “Socs were just guys
after all. Things were rough all over, but it was
better that way. That way you could tell the other
guy was human too.”
What does Ponyboy mean in this quote? How can
adversity make us more human?
• When you are done, begin looking at the questions your
book club will discuss today.
Driving Questions
1. What are the costs and benefits of conformity or
nonconformity to a peer group? How do we measure
these costs and benefits?
2. How does a person's relationship with his/her
peers affect the kind of person he/she will become?
The Outsiders—Chapter 7/8 Discussion
• Use the questions on your
group’s Google Doc to guide the
discussion.
• When speaking/answering, use
text evidence to support your
thinking.
• Everyone should speak at least
once for each question.

Figurative Language: Metaphor
• What is a
metaphor?
• What is their
purpose?
Character Metaphor Mini-Poster
Directions:
Choose an important character from the book.
Think about three metaphors (or similes) that you
might use to describe that character.
Example: Johnny is a stick of dynamite ready to explode.
Dally is a wild colt that cannot be tamed.
When you’ve come up with your three metaphors
for your character, make a mini poster. Draw your
character and write the metaphors around their
picture. *This may also be created digitally.
